A presidential election was held in Akashi on 25 June and 2 July 2005.
Incumbent Kōsaku Ayuzawa had enjoyed solid popularity during his first term in office, and his re-election was seen as a foregone conclusion. The other candidates included a single centre-right candidate from the Moderate People's Party, the customary Communist Party and Future Party candidates, the National Union's first candidacy since 1980, and an independent Goth candidate.
Kōsaku won a plurality of 47,3% in the first round, slightly larger than 5 years before, and established a wide lead over his challengers. He then won the second round a week later, with 60,6% against MPP candidate Miki Iwayama's 39,4%. Notably, Kōsaku achieved a clean sweep of all provinces, as even voters in conservative-leaning Takao respected his performance in office enough to give him a modest majority.
