The flag of Senria (Senrian: 썬류우노꼮끼, Senryuu no kokki) is a horizontal triband of black-cobalt blue-black, with the blue stripe narrower than the black stripes and the emblem of Senria superimposed at the middle of the flag. In Senria, it is sometimes referred to as the "water caltrop flag" (Senrian: 료우쏘우끼, Ryousouki) in reference to the emblem, which is based upon the water caltrop mon of the historical figure Hyouzaemon Nabesima.

History

Imperial period

[various imperial banners, flags, emblems, with the eventual official imperial flag after the keiou restoration]

Republican period

[creation and standardization of the republican flag with the Senrian Revolution ] During the revolution, several different variants of the flag were flown, including variants where the emblem was situated entirely within the blue stripe, variants with stripes of equal width, variants with white fimbriation between the stripes, variants without the emblem, and even variants with solid-colored fields. Aiming to avoid any confusion that might emerge from this proliferation of variations, official guidelines for the flag's construction were published on December 9, 1919. []
