A presidential election was held in Akashi on 24 June and 1 July 2000.

The retirement of incumbent Emi Hanamura left an open race for the first time. The light blue bloc quickly settled on a common candidate, and the rest of the field was completed by candidacies from the Socialist Party, Communist Party, and the first appearances of the Future Party and Green Party.

The SP's candidate Kōsaku Ayuzawa won the first round with 45,5% of the vote, a 25% lead over his nearest challenger, while the GP's Hanako Uesato notably finished first in Shimachi. This set the stage for the second round, which Kōsaku won by 61% to 39%, gaining majorities in all provinces but Takao.
