Nowoczesność (Modernity) is a minor political party in West Miersa. Established in 1994 when Anioł Sugalski was expelled from Naprzód, it has become a centre-left party, advocating for economic liberalism, social liberalism, and Miersan nationalism.

History

In 1994, Anioł Sugalski, a member of the West Miersan National Assembly was expelled from the governing Naprzód for holding values "incompatible with the party charter." In response, Sugaliski created and registered a new political party, Nowoczesność, to promote "a modern Miersan nation based on modern Euclean values."

Sugalski would spend the next two years preparing for the election to "represent the modern Miersan:" this led to a focus on the major cities of the country, where in the 1996 election, all Nowoczesność candidates would stand, including Sugalski, who was representing a constituency in Krada.

However, the 1996 election saw the loss of Nowoczesność's representation in the National Assembly. Sugalski would continue leading the party until after the 2001 elections, during which time Nowoczesność gained representation in the voivodeships of Święciżar and Żobrodź for the first time.

After Sugalski retired, he was succeeded by Dariusz Rychlik as party leader. Rychlik sought to expand the party's reach beyond "the cities of Żobrodź and Krada" and appeal to "those who dislike the radical policies of the Green Party." Thus, Rychlik sought to moderate his platform to attract those in rural areas and those who opposed the Green Party, with a vision of "returning to the National Assembly" in 2006.

However, the 2006 elections fared poorly, as although Nowoczesność gained more votes in 2006 than in 2001, their support was more spread out across West Miersa than the Green Party, which meant they did not gain any seats. This was repeated in 2011, which led to Rychlik resigning from the party leadership in 2012.

Rychlik was succeeded by Aurelia Kaminsky as party leader. Under her leadership, Kaminsky sought to "return Nowoczesność to its roots," with Kaminsky saying that "Rychik's reckless expansion of Nowoczesność has hindered our party's ability to win seats: the only way we may win any seat in the National Assembly is to concentrate our resources and efforts in the cities where we can win." Thus, she ended Rychlik's efforts to expand the party in rural areas, and in 2016, it led to the party receiving fewer votes than in 2011.

Ideology

Nowoczesność's economic policies are based on economic liberalism, with Nowoczesność supporting privatising West Miersa's state-owned enterprises to "improve West Miersa's competitiveness" and to "increase the prosperity of the free Miersan nation." Nowoczesność advocates West Miersan membership in the Euclean Community and a withdrawal from Samorspi, with Aurelia Kaminsky saying in 2018 that "we need to cut the chains that bind us with Soravia, and go in a progressive direction, towards the EC."

Nowoczesność's social policies are socially liberal, with Nowoczesność supporting legalising abortion up to 20 weeks and legalising same-sex marriage. It supports recognising minority rights for the Vedmedi and Lemovician communities, as well as relaxing restrictions on immigration to "attract newcomers to the heart of Euclea."

However, Nowoczesność is a supporter of Miersan nationalism, with Anioł Sugalski saying in 2000 that "Miersa should be reunified under the constitution of the Miersan Sotirian Republic," although it advocates for a civic nationalism as opposed to an ethnic nationalism commonly advocated by Miersan parties.
