The National Expressway System (Namorese: Гуккунгдосе tr. Gukkungdose) is a system of controlled-access highways in Namor. The system was inaugurated in 1961 by the administration of Antelope Gelai and is considered one of the most signature achievements of his presidency.

Since its inception, the National Expressway System has covered the entire country, including regions detached from the Namorese mainland such as Txotai, Peitoa, and Riro. National Expressways can be found in every district and city. Together, the expressways make up one of the most expansive highway networks in Esquarium.

National Expressways are identified by a green rectangular marker with the number of the expressway inscribed in white.

History

The expressway system in Namor underwent rapid expansion under Liberationist rule, which saw expressways as critical to building a modern nation and defending Namor from foreign aggression. Even before the National Expressways came into existence, the government built the "Four Great Expressways" — the Pan-Namorese Expressway, Namo-Xiangzhou Expressway, Mojing-Tungmo Expressway, and Khao-Xhipei Expressway. Expressways at the time were not numbered because there were so few.

As Namor abandoned its isolationist policies in the years following Antelope Yunglang's death, more emphasis was placed on upgrading the country's infrastructure to encourage the movement of goods that could stimulate the economy. The continuing separatist insurgency in Txotai also convinced officials that a more elaborate expressway network was needed to support the Namorese Liberation Army logistically in a forthcoming conflict with Luziyca. Starting in the late 1950s, President-General Antelope Gelai's administration started drafting the blueprint for a national numbered expressway system that would rival those in developed countries. The final plan was formally approved in 1961, and construction of the National Expressway System began shortly afterward.

The Four Great Expressways were integrated into the National Expressway System while new expressways were built across the country. From 1961 to 1971, most expressways were built in central and southern Namor with the purpose of connecting the cities to the rural areas. After the Third Namo-Luziycan War, the government built more expressways in the north, leading to the construction of NE-61, NE-211, and NE-311, as well as the extension of NE-21 — which originally ended in Hangcho — to Vetpei.

In 2007, the Peitoa Expressway, a circumferential highway in Peitoa that was built under Republican rule, was integrated into the National Expressway System as NE-71, becoming the first and only non-auxiliary National Expressway situated within a single district.

In 2018, following Riro's incorporation into Namor, the expressway connecting Riro with mainland Namor was rebranded as NE-81 — the latest addition to the National Expressway System thus far.

Numbering system

All National Expressways have two names — a long name that usually contains the names of the expressway's terminuses, and a one, two, or three-digit number that contains the number 1 in the end. Generally, an expressway has a higher number if it is located farther from Tanken Lake. For example, NE-1, the expressway with the lowest number, directly orbits Tanken Lake. NE-11 has a higher number because it is farther from Tanken Lake than NE-1.

Main expressways are assigned one or two-digit numbers, while auxiliary routes — extensions of main expressways — are assigned a three-digit number wherein the last two digits consist of the number of the main expressway. For example, NE-151 contains the number 51 in the last two digits of its number to show it is a spur route of NE-51. A slight deviation from this rule occurs when numbering the Arra-Xhipei Expressway, a spur route of NE-1. Because NE-1 has a single-digit number, the Arra-Xhipei Expressway is numbered NE-101 instead of NE-11, which is another main expressway with auxiliary routes of its own.

Kilometer zero of most expressways begins at the first point listed in the expressway's long name. For example, kilometer zero in the Namo-Xiangzhou Expressway is located in Namo since Namo appears before Xiangzhou in the expressway's long name. Kilometer zero of NE-11, also known as the Nozama-Shayen-Xhishin Expressway, is located in Nozama City. The kilometer zero of circumferential expressways that do not follow the traditional long naming scheme such as NE-1 and NE-71 is determined arbitrarily. NE-1's kilometer zero is located in the city of Tanken, while NE-71's kilometer zero is situated in Shinnachin, the capital of Peitoa. The Pan-Namorese Expressway, or NE-51, begins at its southern terminus in Shachin and ends at the border with Transborea.

Exit numbers correspond with the kilometer markers; an exit along an expressway that is located 50 kilometers away from kilometer zero would be numbered Exit 50. If there are multiple exits within a kilometer, the exits share the same number but are assigned letter suffixes.

Signage

All National Expressways are identified by a dark green rectangular sign with the number of the expressway inscribed in white. The sign is usually accompanied by a smaller green rectangular sign on top containing the name of the terminus which the driver is approaching while driving in a certain direction. For example, someone driving towards the direction of Xiangzhou on NE-41 would be considered "Xiangzhou-bound."

In cases where two separate National Expressways merge before separating again, the expressway would be marked by a longer rectangular sign with the numbers of both expressways inscribed on it. The higher number would be on top while the lower number would be on the bottom.
