Alsland is divided into eight Provinces. The provinces of Alsland each are members of a linguistic community and each province has a high level of autonomy.
The most populated province is Delland with 1,893,707 inhabitants. The largest province by area is Fawkhamshire which is also the least densely populated province. Yndyk is the smallest province by area but has the highest population density of every province. Martiland is the province with the smallest number of inhabitants with 993,228 inhabitants at the last census.

Politics and governance
Admission of new provinces
Two provinces have been admitted since Alsland gained independence in 1919. Martiland was admitted in 1925 after previously being merged with Middewald. Yndyk was admitted in 1995 following a successful referendum about seceding from Delland. The referendum was backed by every major bloc and party in the country.
Attempts have been made to separate Wottested from Delland, most recently in 2003 when a referendum was held on the issue, unlike in Yndyk the referendum failed due to a lack of support from the city's Swathish and Weranian minorities. Other prominent movements include the secession of east Zittau from the rest of the province.
Burnshire
The region of Burnshire in southern Fawkhamshire is the only majority Estmerish region in Alsland and has an active secession movement. In 2016 the separatist Estmerish Alliance party won a plurality of seats in the Burnshire council and requested the permission to hold a referendum on seceding from Fawkhamshire the following year. The referendum was approved by the Fawkhamshire Assembly but didn't receive a vote in the Folkssenaat.
Burnshire becoming a province was a requirement in coalition talks between the Estmerish Alliance and National Bloc following the 2017 legislative election but coalition talks collapsed after the party withdrew.
Opinion polls conducted between 2015 and 2018 show consistent levels of support for Burnshire secession with around 60% of Burnshire residents approving of the idea of secession. In 2020 a timeline for Burnshire secession was drawn up by the Burnshire council which specifies holding a referendum in conjunction with the 2022 provincial elections. The plan was endorsed by Premier Ottila Möller in March 2021.
In July 2021 Owen Rees announced a referendum was to be held on secession during the 2022 provincial elections after talks with the Fawkhamshire provincial government and the Alslandic federal government. If successful Burnshire will be the third province to be created after Alslandic independence and it will be the smallest province in terms of population. Burnshire's administrative centre Newick will become the smallest provincial capital with only 28,000 residents.
