Yamato Kitagawa (23 April 1993) is a Lucis Army field officer and formerly, a clandestine officer in the Imperial Army. He is the eldest son of Kiriya Kitagawa.
Kiriya loved Yamato and wanted him to take over command of Task Force 141 but Kiriya was disappointed and at Yamato's over-aggressive tactics and near suicidal orders causing him to relieve the command of the 5th Regiment. This made the latter hate his own father for it and plotted against him as early as late 2017. It was Yamato who also plotted the Incident at Samcheok that caused confusion within the base and his father immediately took control of the situation. Yamato was imprisoned at St. Frederika Island until his rescue in 2025 by Geheimeabteilung operatives under orders of Bertina Ingersleben and was placed under Rupprecht Grünspan's authority. After his rescue, he would serve as his retainer and one of his core officers in the field. However, Yamato would make his way to contact the Gneisenau Circle, where he became an informant until 2029, when he cemented his defection. Following this, He was reinstated after he reunited with his father.
During the Neocon War, Yamato would be responsible for plotting out various sabotage missions along with his Task Force. His nightly raids contributed being given him the nickname of The White Wolf and was tagged as a terrorist by the Neocons with a bounty of 2,000,000 Concordian Dollars. Yamato would never be captured throughout the Neocon War and took over command of Task Force 141 by 2040.
Early Life
Born in his father's hometown of York, Lucis; Yamato was described by doctors as a blessed man. Growing up, he became fascinated with his family's history, being the great-grandson of EWII veteran Field Marshal Daidoji Kitagawa. He was often interested in the topics relating to his exploits. He was also interested in the exploits of the Lucis Commandos and of the early SAS. His great-grandfather often thought of Yamato as a promising commander in the future, something which Kiriya took into consideration as he raised Yamato.
During his teenage years, he was enrolled in a military academy. Yamato was surrounded by many popular students, who often picked on unpopular students in the campus. He even picked on his younger brother Naoto after his friends called him to be too saintly and priestly. Yamato would often join in their temptation of Naoto, until Kiriya got a wind of Yamato's bullying towards his younger brother. To get back at him, Kiriya ordered Yamato's professors into giving him failing remarks, which caused him to be delayed a year. Realising that his father was responsible as a way to get back for Naoto's sake, he apologised to his father and Naoto, which the two promptly agreed. Yamato would never again hang out with his old friends, who were promptly failed by the school's chancellor, who was also a friend of Kiriya.
Military Career
Imperial Crisis
Falling out of favor and Jealousy against Naoto
As early as late November 2016, Kiriya had been sending Naoto to the frontlines than Yamato, who he had tasked with saying in defence duty. His impatience caused him to believe that Kiriya had favored Naoto over him, causing him to be jealous of his younger brother. Yamato tried to wound his own brother but failed and immediately tried to pretend that he had taken no part of it. This jealousy would last until his imprisonment.
During an operation in May 2017, Yamato rendezvous'd with Richard's team to provide support as well as help in the gathering of intelligence. Things went so well until they were extracted. Yamato immediately ordered Richard to prime the explosives to set the facility ablaze. Knowing that the explosion would harm them, Richard refused for their sake and Yamato tried to force Richard but failed. The two exchanged a short blows until Yamato got on top of him and primed the explosives himself, nearly killing the whole team and their extraction. Richard immediately scolded Yamato for his impatience and the two had a heated exchange until Alice Janggok and Junichi Samegawa stopped the two. Kiriya immediately called the two and demanded an explanation. He knew that Richard was following his orders safely as well as Yamato but did not care for the safety of others and himself. He sided with Richard's patience to prime the explosives from a distance, causing Yamato to tackle Richard. Kiriya raised his voice to cease the fighting and ordered Richard and the others to leave them in peace. Kiriya then stripped Yamato of his command of the 5th Regiment and Yamato began to doubt his own father whether if he loved him or not. Kiriya refused to put a harm on his own son and said that he never favored between him or Naoto. Yamato rebuked his father and said that he was lying before walking out.
Plotting to kill his own father
In late May 2017, Yamato attended the Workers' Community Conference in Southern Quenmin to join the socialist ranks and plot to betray his own father as well as his own 'former friends'. The high commissar agreed to Yamato's plans and that he immediately revealed many weakpoints as well as hoping for a Socialist Quenmin invading the Zanarkian continent. The socialists also agreed to support an uprising in the Lucis Isles to install a radical communist government with Yamato as its head. He also plotted with the Imperials thru Emmerich Grunnewald, who also became his close friend to kill his own father and brother. Yamato also became the reason for the deaths of several Task Force members including Austin Hoang, Jonathan Vo and others. He had also been working with Clarabelle Dinh, who met her end two months later at the hands of Darzana.
From June 2017 to March 2018, Yamato attempted to assassinate his father and follow the plans of the Asianna nations to blame the Commonwealth for its failures but all of it backfired thanks to the suspicion of Darzana Magbaredge and his own brother, Naoto Kitagawa.
Endgame and Imprisonment
By March 2018, Yamato decided that it was time for him to 'take over'. On the night of the 10th of March, He staged a mutiny within Samcheok with the support of the Communists and Imperials. For three hours, He held several ATS personnel as hostage and demanded a ransom of one hundred million gil as well as handing his own father for him to end his life. Kiriya immediately reacted by raiding the building where the ATS personnel were kept hostage and chasing Yamato until they got to the army barracks where Yamato had set up his quarters. Kiriya went after Yamato, who had already gone berserk and killed even his own troops. When the two met, a long minute gun battle between the two collided. Kiriya was then knocked out and as Yamato was about to kill him, Caroline came and screamed towards his son to stop. The sight of Caroline attracted him to point his gun at her but the sight of his mother moved Yamato to tears as he couldn't bear to kill her. Kiriya immediately grabbed the opportunity and got on top of Yamato and restrained him. The situation was under control by 5:45.
Yamato was brought to a military trial at a military tribunal and found guilty of high treason and was sentenced to death by a Lucian Court. However, Kiriya, using his influenced reduced the sentence to life imprisonment at the lonely island of St. Fredericka with only one guard and two chefs for company. He also barred Yamato from going outside his prison and was only given a cell with a bed, table, chair and a seperate room for the bathroom. Kiriya refused to heed a death sentence because of him considering Yamato to be his son. For the next 7 Years, He argued with his jailors and was kept secluded in low spirits and in full regret.
Chalcedonic War
Yamato, sporting a longer hair was rescued by the Imperial troops of the Geheimabteilung under the orders of Bertina Ingersleben with direct authorisation of Rupprecht Grunspan in early 2026 with the intention of recruiting capable commanders in the field. Initially, Deathshead was not keen on reinstating Yamato following his failure in 2018. However, he forgave Yamato and he became one of his most senior officers. Yamato would show complete loyalty to Deathshead. However, Yamato began to secretly find ways of defecting back and reuniting with his father. This would not happen immediately as he crossed paths with former TF 141 comrade, Edward 'EJ' Blazkowicz and Brandon Ngo, who were ordered to assassinate him after confronting him. Here, Yamato revealed his intentions to defect. However, Blazkowicz told Yamato to be their informant as regards to Deathshead's operations.
Throughout the war, he would form the Geheime Spezialeinheit Yamato, which was ordered by Deathshead to counter the Neocon Task Force Nicator. Although Nicator had the edge, Yamato's task force was primarily composed of veterans. He reemployed personnel that he knew from the previous war such as Gabrielle Reuter, Luitpold Grothaus, Hildtraud Rothschild, and later, Bertina Ingersleben. However, he also employed Gneisenau Partisan members that included his former friends Edward 'EJ' Blazkowicz, Brandon Ngo, and Erik Engelmann using different alias. Together, his task force became one of the most feared Geheimeabteilung units by the Neocons. Although Yamato's loyalty lied with Deathshead, he often does not slip the chance to send information to his father through the partisans. As a result, Yamato often fed vital information to Heimdallr under Deathshead's nose.
During this war, he became acquainted with the Gneisenau Partisans and from here, he would meet Caroline Bessler. Caroline was aware of Yamato's treacherous history and thus, was initially hostile against him. But it wouldn't take long for Yamato to find that she is the love of his life. It took Yamato many months before he would finally win Caroline's heart and prove that he isn't the treacherous man that he was in the previous war, and that he had a change of heart. In June, Caroline gave birth to their first son, Tanner L. Kitagawa. But because of Yamato's service with the Imperial government, he could not find any time to see them or be at risk of being caught fraternising with the Partisans. However, thanks to Reuter's efforts, Yamato managed to find time to meet with Caroline and his son. Caroline and Yamato were later married with Friedrich Albricht presiding over their wedding.
He later got acquainted with Kasimira zu Schärtal-Tangersten and her sister Ronja zu Schärtal-Tangersten. Of the two, Yamato found Kasimira more of a trustworthy ally over Ronja, whom he had seen to be reckless and violent. Yamato would remember his father's norms that often the most gullible ones are most reckless. As a result, he placed more trust on Kasimira. However, Yamato would also become close with Ronja but kept a close eye on her. Later, Yamato and Kasimira would become close allies. Kasimira would later see the other side of Yamato's dark personality, that he was a family man, often telling stories about his wife and son. Yamato would be willing to put his life on the line for them rather than die for a cause that he couldn't save.
In 2028, the Imperial Government began its downfall. Following Deathshead's death in Febuary of that year, there have been talks of some of the 16th Paranormal Regiment and the Geheimeabteilung to defect to the Neocons, with Ronja being the most supportive of the defection plan. However, Yamato and the rest of his detachment chose to defect to Heimdallr in the event that the Imperial Government would finally collapse. Although he never revealed his intentions to Timon Künneth, he approached Kasimira and hoped that her more just and benevolent personality would drag her by his side. While Ronja was driven by her thirst for power, Kasimira was prudent and benevolent. Kasimira immediately agreed to Yamato's plan to leave for Heimdallr once the Imperial Government fell.
In the late summer of 2029, the 16th Regiment found their demise at the hands of Task Force Nicator and Alice Janggok during Mission Bucephalus. At the same time, Ronja and the Pro-Neocon members of the regiment defected to the Neocons while Yamato and the rest bid time to gather what remained of the intel by the site. Ronja would be heartbroken upon finding out that Kasimira had chosen to side with Yamato. A short fight between Kasimira and Ronja with Alice ensued. Though the former was outnumbered, Yamato managed to save her life by detonating an explosive that caused portions of the ruins to collapse. This gave Yamato and Kasimira enough time to escape and evacuate, along with Yamato's Detachment and the remainder of the 16th Regiment who sided with Yamato.
Upon their return to Castle Isenstadt, they gathered what remained of Deathshead's research, including the highly classified Nanoshield Technology. Yamato set fire to the castle before Ronja and the Neocons could arrive to capture them. They immediately escaped with the help of the Partisans, who managed to smuggle them to Erebonia and into the capital. Yamato's detachment were received as refugees but were given civilian identities before they travelled to Trista, in order to find his father.
In 9 September, they reached the Thors Military Academy. Blazkowicz went ahead of the group to meet up with Marshal Kitagawa. But this was a plan set forth by Yamato to meet his father in person. In the afternoon, when they reached the gates, Yamato and the detachment tried to get in the academy grounds but the guards had refused as they were Imperial refugees. Blazkowicz later came out with Marshal Kitagawa to see what the fuss was about by the gate. Kitagawa noticed the "Imperial refugees" and said to the guards to allow them to enter, as he might obtain information from them. After they were fed, Yamato and the rest of the detachment waited for Marshal Kitagawa by the academy's garden. When Marshal Kitagawa arrived, he began to question what the refugees might have in store for them. He questioned them one-by-one until he finally got to Yamato.
Yamato uttered his father's familiar lines. At first, Kiriya thought that the refugee was an admirer of him, but when he revealed his true identity as his son, Kiriya was shocked and overjoyed to finally reunite with him. He revealed himself to his father as the one who had been sending vital information as his group waged war against the Neocons, learning of their intentions for their war against Heimdallr. The two went up in tears and embraced each other as well as embracing his mother, brother, and sisters. Immediately after this, Yamato was reinstated, with the members of his detachment being given asylum, including given a position within Task Force 141 as part of the newly created Detachment K, which was a subgroup of TF 141 consisting of Imperial defectors led by Yamato.
Neocon War
Personal Life
As a child, Yamato loved his parents but was jealous of Naoto due to him getting all the attention as a child but the brothers soon reconciled until 2017. He liked her younger sister, Yukari but did not care for Katsuragi much. He was also arrogant and rather overconfident. Yamato was described as an overly aggressive attacker who issues near suicidal orders, resulting him into relieving of command in late 2017. This caused anger against his own mother. His sister Yukari told him not to stab his own family in the back but he told her that he had no choice. Incidents in late 2017 to early 2018 contributed to his clandestine activities with the Imperials, who, coincidentally, had his father raise suspicion. After the mutiny he staged within Samcheok, His father refused to heed a death sentence and had him imprisoned for a life time at the lonely island of St. Frederika, 50 miles away from Altissia. Here, He argued with his jailor throughout.
Kiriya had initially wanted Yamato to follow in his footsteps, but Yamato's personality became a sole purpose for him being robbed of opportunities. Although, Yamato would never realise until late of his father's plan for him. Even when he had betrayed him, Kiriya knew someway or somehow, Yamato would take over command despite his fugitive history. Yamato correctly predicted that his father had longed for him when they were joyfully reunited. Although Naoto was often favoured, Yamato would realise that his father had planned for him a big role, and that was who would take over his place. After he reunited with his father, Yamato became more selfless, kind and caring like his brother and became the figure of what his father had been. Later in his life, Yamato possessed his father's cunning, uncalculating ruthlessness, sensitivity and unquestioned loyalty.
According to one of Kiriya's closest friends, Karl Kretschmann; While Naoto had possessed their father's smarts and wits, it was Yamato who possessed the physical skill and cunning.
