On November 8th, 2023, a Mw 9.0 undersea megathrust earthquake occurred in the Konkurso Gulf 102 km (63 mi) east of Colensay, Danna, Pian Islands. It lasted approximately seven minutes, causing a tsunami. Internationally known as the Konkurso Gulf earthquake and tsunami and in the Konkurso region as 8.11.23, it was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Nortua, and the sixth most powerful earthquake recorded in the world since 1900.
The earthquake caused extensive destruction and structural collapses across the Pian Islands, notably in the southern main islands of Carraun and Danna. The main island of Northan and its population centers also experienced widespread damage, including the capital of Ocetia and the city of Loughdalk. The northernmost port in the Pians, Chamart, located over 500 kilometers away from the epicenter, experienced shaking and light damage. The earthquake triggered powerful tsunami waves that may have reached heights of up to 40.5 meters (133 ft), traveled at 700 km/h (435 mph), and up to 10 km (6 mi) inland on Danna Island, which was the most affected area. Tsunamis also reached the southwest mainland of Nortua, causing flooding and damage along the coasts of Birnir, Acdia, and Irane. Waves reached Cadair's Cuxnau peninsula as well. Across the affected region, 34,728 people were killed, 45,270 were injured, and more than 5 million people were displaced.
Immediately after the quake, President Jaye Ayette issued a nationwide state of emergency, calling the situation "apocalyptic" and pleaded for the CCA to help. International response to the disaster was immediate, with the Sotoan Basin Union mobilizing military forces to assist in rescue and recovery efforts. The Zamastanian Navy deployed the Saunier and Browning, the Elbresian aircraft carrier Cormac Cowpeland, and the Quetanan aircraft carrier QWS Arsenio Fontes were deployed to the region.
