Avians (Pythian Species)

The Avians, also known as Aviae Pythos, are a species of sapient and humanoid birds, hailing and mainly found in the Mur Refuge, Sparkalia.
Their adeptness at high altitudes has made them a proficient species with the capacity to go where others cannot. The Avians generally live in small to large Chiefdoms, each governed by either a Matriarch or Patriarch.
Avians are generally able to glide and make long leaps but not fly with their wings. Although some Avians are able to fly, none are able to fly for long distances due to the much larger weight.
Anatomy
Avians stand more upright than other birds (thanks to evolution) with their knees freed from their hips just like humans. Avians claws, of which they have four on each limb, give them added grip on harsh terrain so they can easily traverse their homes in the uneven steppes. They’re also lightweight with hollow bones but still much heavier han their non-sapient counterparts.
Avians have exceptional long-distance vision and can see if a tree has fruits or not from far away. They are also a dimorphic species with males and females looking quite different from each other.
Society
Avian society is generally classified into Matriarchal, Patriarchal and Allied groups with a shared language and culture:
- Matriarchal Groups: These are generally found in southern Murs along with the Patriarchal groups. They are led by a council of 'Alder' females who elect a leader amongst themselves. Their villages are generally hunting-oriented and have clay sheds.
- Patriarchal Groups: These are generally found in the central interior of the Mur Refuge and are governed by Hereditary Warlords. Thier villages are generally animal-husbundary oriented.
- Allied Groups: These are groups that have signed subsidiary alliances with the nation of Karthia. They practice direct democracy and have a nominal head of state know as a 'Resident' who also handles day to day affairs of state. Cheifdoms in the Allied Societies are independent but have to give up their rights over defence and foreign affairs to Karthia. Such groups are generally found near the coast in Northern Murs and near the Yuvin river and New Karthia hills.
