Template:Politicsboxend This article lists political parties in the People's Republic of Namor. Namor developed into a multi-party system as Minjuha took place. As of now, there are five political parties that have representation in the Namorese Central Council, while there are also more registered political parties that either have representation in the local level or no representation at all.

History

The history of political parties in Namor dates back to the late 19th century, when the Namorese Democratic Brotherhood was founded in NMR 2238. The Brotherhood was a major opposition force against the Antelopian Dynasty and led the Double Fourth Revolution that toppled its rule and set up the Republic of Namor. A split occurred shortly afterwards, in which liberal democratic elements of the Brotherhood broke away to form the Republican Party of Namor. The Republican Party would eventually unite Namor under one government and rule Namor as its de facto sole legal party.

A number of other parties formed in the NMR 2250s, mainly the Communist Party of Namor and Liberationist Party of Namor.

The Liberationists overthrew the Republicans and established the People's Republic on the mainland in NMR 2290. The new People's Republic was nominally a multi-party state led by the Liberationist Party, and smaller parties such as the RPN-RA, Party of Socialist Reconstruction and Progress Party had seats in the Central Council. But in practice the Liberationists wielded total authority and continued to exert considerable influence during and after the Minjuha era, when the state and military separated from the party and the government lifted restrictions on political rights.

The NMR 2320s and NMR 2330s saw a boom in new political parties, including the Democratic Socialists, Socialists and 3535 Manifesto Union (later the People's First Coalition). The New Democrats were formed in NMR 2340. Despite the rise of new parties, the Liberationists retained total control of the government until it lost the majority of the Central Council in the NMR 2348 election before losing the presidency in the NMR 2353 presidential election. The Democratic Socialists controlled the government from NMR 2353 to NMR 2368. Since the NMR 2368, the New Democrats are the governing party.

National and regional parties

While people are technically free to form political parties, parties have to be registered with the Ministry of Public Security in order to appear on the ballot during elections.

Registered parties are then classified into one of the following categories in what is known as the "two-level system:"

  • National-level party: Defined by the Ministry of Public Security as a party that "aspires to serve the entire population." National-level parties may participate in elections for Central Council (the national legislature) and nominate candidates for presidential elections.
  • Regional-level party: Defined as any party that "aspires to serve a particular region within Namor only." Most regional-level parties are based in autonomous republics and represent minority interests, although some are also based in regular districts. Regional-level parties may participate in regional-level general elections, but they cannot participate in national elections or nominate candidates for presidential elections.

Critics of the "two-level system" say it prevents regional-level parties and their constituents - usually minorities - from receiving proper representation in the Central Council, while giving "frivolous" parties a chance to win seats by allowing them to participate.
