Amahuiz (born 6 December 1978) was Emperor of Andamonia from 1997 until the dissolution of the Second Andamonian Empire in December 2016. He led his country in the War of the Eastern Velar, which ended with significant territorial concessions to Trellin and led to insurrections within Andamonia. After two years of civil war, he instituted the Andamonian Third Republic and abdicated as emperor, intending to pave the way for the country's peaceful rebirth. Despite his failures and inability, he was popular within Andamonia and his abdication was greatly mourned by his people.

Early life

Amahuiz was the second of Ayastoc Abazu's two sons by his second wife, Xochiyaia. He was privately educated in the imperial palace until he turned sixteen, whereupon he enrolled in the Zacatla Imperial University, commencing an undergraduate course in physics in early 1995. His lecturers recalled that Amahuiz was interested in pursuing a career in physics research; he applied for a master's degree in the University of Rintalinna, Valkea, in anticipation of receiving an honours undergraduate degree. He was forced to abandon this plan four months before graduation when his elder brother, Mirhitoc, drowned on a holiday outside Alacuaha. A week later, their father, the emperor, died from a blood clot. Amahuiz, entirely untrained for the throne, was promptly elevated to the monarchy.

Reign

On his accession, at the age of eighteen, Amahuiz was the youngest emperor in over three centuries. He was reportedly overwhelmed by the demands of rule and, though he tried to come to grips with his responsibilities, he realised before long that he was not sufficiently able for his position. He began to delegate liberally and without concern for the ability of those to whom he deferred authority. His chief advisor was Mocat Xekomo, who became First Speaker in 2006 and held this position through the last years of the empire, in whom he placed great trust and whom he allowed to steer him in matters of national policy. He was often at loggerheads with the Grand Assembly, most of whom he considered unfit for national service, and he attempted to rule without their input to the greatest extent possible.

Despite the reasonably competent hand of Xekomo behind the throne, Amahuiz did little to stall Andamonia's continued decline. Unemployment remained high, the economy was stagnant and the military suffered from equipment and morale issues. In 2013, he was faced with a crisis in Mintra and Rha'gutza, two of the Trophy Ports that had been seized from Trellin in the 1890s and were a hotbed of anti-Andamonian sentiment. Violent protests that erupted in that year led to Trellin ending a century of isolationism when Mahrim II demanded that Andamonia return the Ports. On the advice of his advisors (with notable dissent from Xekomo), Amahuiz led Andamonia against Trellin in the War of the Eastern Velar. Within two months, the Trophy Ports had been reannexed by Trellin, Andamonia's offensives in eastern Txekrikar had been dramatically rebuffed and mass protests had erupted across the empire. Xekomo fled the country and, on 18 November, Amahuiz capitulated.

Amahuiz's surrender pledged to restore the Andamonian-occupied portion of the Usmalím to Txekrikar. In the aftermath of the conflict, he worked assiduously to forge a new, positive relationship with Trellin and Txekrikar, and this was reciprocated. All parties expressed a desire to see a strong Andamonian economy and a healthy trade relationship. Unemployment soared in Andamonia, however, and local militias turned against central government. A new phase of internal conflict was dubbed the War of Integrity, as loyalist imperial forces struggled to maintain order. On 8 December 2014, as crowds marched on the capital, Amahuiz fled to Paradise City in the Blackhelm Confederacy, which had given his ancestors refuge in previous centuries, although he returned shortly afterward. In April 2015, he asked Azara V of Trellin for assistance in restoring peace in Andamonia. Trellin dubbed their intervention "Operation Flying Mynah."

Ultimately, Amahuiz resolved to abdicate and institute a republic in Andamonia, seeing it as the best way to lay a new foundation for a peaceful, prosperous Andamonia. He established an electoral commission in 2016 to oversee an election for the office of president and, on 25 December, as polls were due to open, announced his abdication. His reign was succeeded by the first term in office of Azanj Timaloc, the former governor of Khorvu, who won the presidential election.
