Krastheim (Rhumkara: Krastheivor), officially known as the Technocratic Council of Krastheim (Rhumkara: Aesthrani Krastheivor), is an insular dwarven nation situated on two primary island chains, Morndhural and Thar-Khazak. Renowned for its advanced crystal technology, Krastheim has a population of approximately 300,000 and is primarily inhabited by the Nithrad, the nation’s dwarven race. The capital city, Site 1 (Atha-Rhem), functions as the central hub for government and crystal energy distribution. Site 1 hosts the offices of Krastheim's three Ministers (Karn), who lead the High Council (Vorgalun Rhun) and manage the nation’s technocratic governance.

Krastheim’s foundation lies in its survival and unity following the Great Restart, during which only the lucky few Nithrad dwarves narrowly escaped extinction. In the aftermath, they established a centralized government known as the High Council, aimed at maximizing resource management and crystal energy utilization on their islands. Three prominent offices, Minister of Resource Extraction (Karn-Garh Rendar), Minister of Shard Utilization (Karn-Garh Aethras), and Minister of Invention (Karn-Garh Nolmath), were created to oversee critical aspects of society. Despite longstanding stability, the nation experienced one significant upheaval, the Site B-1 Crisis, wherein the Minister of Shard Utilization engaged in a power struggle within the High Council, leading to temporary disruption in energy policies and usage protocols.

The Nithrad society deeply reveres the Aetherium Shards, with the largest of these located in Site 1, powering the main island, Sharmund (Shar-Mhond). Krastheim is a techno-gerontocracy confederation, valuing expertise and wisdom in governance. High Council members are elected based on a combination of technical skill and age, ensuring experienced leadership. Ministers are selected from the council itself, guided by consensus on technical proficiency and dedication to Aetherium principles, reflecting the Nithrad’s belief in knowledge and unity under the Shards' guidance.

Etymology

The name Krastheim originates from the Rhumkara term Krastheivor, which is derived from krastm meaning "forge" or "harness", and heivor, meaning "home" or "land". This name reflects the Nithrad dwarves’ commitment to forging a new life around their primary energy source, the Aetherium Shards. The name symbolizes their reverence for the crystal as a foundation of their society, as well as their industrious spirit in rebuilding and advancing their homeland.

History

Emergence

During the Great Restart, the Nithrad dwarves faced near extinction as their once-vast network of subterranean tunnels and caverns collapsed. This collapse caused devastating cave-ins, trapping or crushing much of the Nithrad population. A fortunate few survived by gathering near a massive Aetherium crystal deep underground, which emitted a protective energy dome. This crystal acted as a life-saving shield, preserving the survivors within its reach and allowing them to endure the cataclysm.

Led by the elder Durmak Dronvath, an experienced underground explorer and miner, the remaining Nithrad eventually emerged from the depths to find an unfamiliar and desolate landscape. Recognizing the necessity of cooperation and leadership, Durmak proposed the formation of a new government, structured around the Aetherium Shard that had saved them. This new society would be dedicated to rebuilding their world in harmony with the Shards and leveraging their energy as the bedrock of their civilization.

Technocratic council

On Pax 11th, 15 AR, the Trifecta Accord was signed, formalizing the establishment of Krastheim's technocratic government. The Accord outlined the three foundational branches of governance, each dedicated to a distinct area critical to the new nation’s survival and progress. The positions of Minister of Resource Extraction, Minister of Shard Utilization, and Minister of Invention were created, forming a balanced, technocratic government. The first ministers were Garnok Dronvath (Resource Extraction), Thurim Aethric (Shard Utilization), and Harmund Freldur (Invention). These founding leaders set up a robust system that has persisted for centuries, focused on efficient resource management, responsible shard energy usage, and innovation.

The council’s governance remained largely stable for centuries, with one major exception, the Site B-1 Crisis in 256 AR. In this incident, Minister Vormak Thrysmir attempted to overthrow the High Council, aiming to establish a centralized regime under his control. Thrysmir’s ambitions led to a brief but intense power struggle, during which he used a faction of loyalists to try and seize control of shard-related infrastructure. Ultimately, Thrysmir was captured, tried for treason, and executed.

Contemporary

In the present day, Krastheim enjoys relative peace and prosperity, focusing on technological advancements and sustainable development through the energy provided by the Aetherium Shards. Over the centuries, Krastheim’s technological prowess has advanced significantly, making the nation a center of innovation in crystal-based energy, weaponry, and infrastructure.

Currently, Krastheim is governed by the 8th generation of the High Council. Krastheim continues to honor the foundations laid by Durmak Dronvath and the first ministers, ensuring the Aetherium Shards remain central to their way of life.

The government of Krastheim is structured around the Trifecta Accord and the Constitution of Krastheim, established to guide governance and ensure harmony. The governing body consists of the High Council, which holds legislative power, and the Three Ministers, who exercise executive and judicial authority within their domains. The nation is divided into three distinct administrative zones: The Mining Zone, The Utility Zone, and The Production Zone. Each zone is overseen by a Minister who leads specialized councils.

The Mining Zone, a central area for resource extraction, is administered by the Minister of Resource Extraction with the Mining Associations, a collective leadership comprised of miners, union leaders, and safety experts. This zone is considered a sacred area due to its high concentration of Aetherium Shards, making it both a center of worship and an industrial zone. Mining is a highly respected but hazardous profession, and the harsh conditions lead to shorter lifespans and office terms for Ministers and Mining Association members. The zone’s rugged environment is balanced by careful rituals and safety practices, ensuring that the Aetherium Shards are handled with respect and reverence.

The Utility Zone is managed by the Minister of Shard Utilization, working alongside the Board of Directors, a council of engineers responsible for the conversion of crystal energy into power for the daily needs of Krastheim. The high-energy environment, filled with intense shard exposure, often results in “light-blindness”, a condition from prolonged exposure to powerful Aetherium energy. This condition renders many high-ranking engineers and the Minister of Shard Utilization blind over time, leading them to wear ceremonial white blindfolds as a symbol of their status and dedication. The Utility Zone is essential to Krastheim’s infrastructure, and its energy distribution ensures that the nation remains operational, efficient, and interconnected.

The Production Zone, dedicated to technological development and innovation, is overseen by the Minister of Invention and a council known as the "Roundtable". This group of scientists and inventors is responsible for regulating the production, testing, and approval of new inventions that incorporate shard technology. The Roundtable promotes a culture of creativity and experimentation, balancing the nation’s respect for tradition with the pursuit of new advancements. Inventions that meet safety and efficacy standards are integrated into Krastheim’s economy and defense, while unproven ideas are subjected to rigorous testing before implementation.

The governance structure of Krastheim includes both democratic and meritocratic elements to ensure representation and expertise within its ruling bodies. The High Council, composed of 15 members, with five representatives from each of the three administrative zones, is elected through direct democracy. Eligible Krastheimers within each zone participate in elections, selecting Council members who will serve as legislators and uphold the principles of the Trifecta Accord. High Council members represent their zones, bringing forth issues, suggestions, and concerns unique to each area while maintaining the collective interests of the nation.

The Ministers are chosen through a separate process. They are not elected by the general public but are selected from within their respective administrative councils. The Mining Associations, Board of Directors, and Roundtable nominate and elect Ministers based on demonstrated expertise, innovation, and dedication. This meritocratic selection is intended to preserve the integrity and specialization required in each zone, ensuring that only the most qualified individuals lead and make critical decisions within their areas of authority.
