Palanca (/pa'la:ŋkə/; Hesurian: Palanka, Teru: பழங்கள் Paḻaṅkaḷ), officially the Republic of Palanca (Hesurian: Republik Palanka, Teru: பழங்கள் குடியரசு Paḻaṅkaḷ Kuṭiyaracu), is a constituent country of the Crowned Republic of Mascylla in western X, located in the X to the west of the X and north-east of the X. The highly autonomous country is comprised of a small archipelago centered around the name-giving island of Palanca, geographically separated from the X continent by the Gulf of X and the X Strait. Palanca has only one maritime border with its closest neighbour, X. It is 424.3 square kilometres (163.8 sq mi) in size, making it the Xth-smallest nation in X. As of 2014, Palanca counts a population of 1,266,104 inhabitants, excluding around 490,000 non-citizens and expratriates (accounting for around 39% of the country's total population); two thirds of the entire population live in the capital and largest city of the country, Nakaram.
The island nation was inhabited for centuries by native Pulicanese, who were famed for their craftsmanship and pearl fishing, renowned throughout the world. Palanca as a city state and later petty kingdom emerged approximately in the 1300s, serving as a significant commercial and economic hub for Aussia-Iraia trade interchanges. Following substantial home rule, Palanca became a Mascyllary protectorate for much of the 19th century until the islands became an autonomous part of Mascylla in 1895. However, Palanca remained a colony only for three decades, before the Assembly of Nations issued to establish mandateship for the archipelago during the Mascyllary Revolution and thereafter. In 1968, the nation opted to return to Mascylla as an autonomous state, having dissolved the AN mandate in 1969.
Although Palanca is referred to as an overseas territory, it is not one of the eighteen regions of Mascylla (being highly autonomous) and is therefore politically and economically independent from Mascylla. However, the Mascyllary authorities provide defense, economic integration, and visa-free access to the country. Virtually the entire population speaks both Hesurian, and native Teru, the official language.
