A '''pretender''' is claimant to a monarchy that has been abolished or is currently occupied by another individual. A pretender may assert his or her own claim on their own behalf or a claim that is advanced by a group on the pretender's behalf. Entries to the list are limited to claims made on a person's behalf, regardless of whether that individual has actively asserted his or her claim, so long as that person has a legitimate link to the line of succession.

A pretender is claimant to a monarchy that has been abolished or is currently occupied by another individual.
