The Midrasian Armed Forces (Midrasian: Forces Armées de Mydrazia), encompass the Midrasian Army, the Midrasian Navy, the Midrasian Air Force, and the Nuclear Strike Force. The Government of Midrasia is regarded as the Commander-in-chief of the armed forces, as its loyalty lies with the Constitution of 1791; although by convention authority is vested in the Consul who has the ability to mobilise the force in times of war with the consent of Senate. The Ministry of Defence in co-ordination within the Council of State is responsible for the conduct of the military and the defence of the nation. Midrasia is one of only three nuclear armed states in Aeia, along with Ternca and Rohst. Midrasia maintains one of the largest defence budgets in Aeia and the largest armed forces in size in the Commonwealth of Democratic Nations.

The ability to declare war is vested in the Senate which may do so with a 2/3rds majority. Nevertheless, the Consul is also vested with the ability to declare a 'State of Emergency' for a period of ten days, during which he or she may declare war. The Senate is required to approve of the actions of the Consul through a 2/3rds majority in order for the state of emergency to be carried beyond the prescribes ten day period.

Within Midrasia, the military has a number of deployments, mostly centred around the Wallaisan and Veleazan borders, where regular patrols take place along the Appian Wall. Currently the Midrasian military also holds a number of overseas deployments across the Commonwealth of Democratic Nations and Mydramonde. The country holds a number of military bases in Brilliania and Navack. Midrasian forces are also involved in patrols along the Kalahari Demilitarised Zone in Onza along with other Commonwealth forces.

History

The modern Midrasian armed forces was officially formed in 1625 with the proclamation of the nouvelle armée during the Midrasian Civil War. However the forces' origins can be traced back to the military of the Fiorentine Empire and the various successor states in the territory which now encompasses metropolitan Midrasia. Many Fiorentine traditions remain within the force today, although most combat and discipline measures were removed in the 1940s. Midrasia has participated in a number of Asuran conflicts throughout its history, regularly pitting the Midrasian army against realms such as Aquidneck, the Newreyan-Vilemyr Commonwealth, tir Lhaeraidd and Veleaz. Throughout its history Midrasia was renowned for the strength of its land forces, widely regarded to be the strongest on the content. The martial ability of the army saw the Midrasian kingdom expand throughout central Asura, incorporating regions such as Riviera, Padania and Vaellenia into the realm. The Midrasian navy was also relatively strong comparative to its Asuran neighbours. Despite the nation's small coastline, the security of the Mydran gulf along with coastal possessions and the naval reforms of the 1620s enabled the Midrasian state to possess a significant naval presence.

Following the establishment of the new Constitutional charter in 1791, the Midrasian army was officially reformed, with its loyalty placed in the Constitutional itself rather than the Consul, although in recent years this has come to be revised somewhat. Since this date the military has undergone a number of structural and doctrinal reforms, most notably in 1870 and 1942. The reforms of 1870 generally dealt with the professionalisation of the force following the conclusion of the Mydro-Veleazan war, opening the officer corps to all social classes and embracing meritocratic systems of promotion. Whilst the 1942 reforms generally dealt with a modernisation of the force in regards to the growing threat of Communist invasion, moving away from conscription based forces to professionalised troops along with the development of an independent nuclear arsenal.

Today the Midrasian armed forces remains one of the strongest in Aeia and whilst working closely with neighbouring nations through the Drago Entente and Lotrič Declaration; it maintains a great degree of independence, mostly due to the impact of the reforms of the National Coalition government and the lasting legacy of Capetism. Nevertheless, in recent years the Midrasian military has come to reduce its outright independence, with the creation of joint-weapon development programs and foreign purchase programs. Since the 1940s the Midrasian military has been involved in a number of international conflicts and peacekeeping missions, most notably the Cheonsamean Civil War, ASU Civil War and Sagalan Civil war.

Doctrine

The Midrasian Armed Forces have three main tasks as outlined by the constitution:

  • To defend the Constitution and those who live under its grace.
  • To assert the territorial integrity of Midrasia and her dominions.
  • To protect and advance the international rule of law.

Generally the Midrasian armed forces is not deployed as disaster relief, such as incidents of flooding or terrorist attacks. Rather, authority in such incidents is devolved to the National Gendarmerie which forms a part of the Midrasian police services. Previously, the Midrasian Constitution did include reference to 'asserting and spreading the values emphasised within [the constitution]', whilst this was utilised by Nineteenth Century politicians as a justification for Midrasian colonialism and expansionism, the article was officially removed from the constitution in 1801 as its inclusion appeared to be a justification for Midrasian conquest of neighbouring Asuran nations. In an attempt to rectify ailing relations with nations such as Aquidneck and Newrey, the offending article was removed.

The Midrasian Army, officially the Grand Army of the Republic comprises the military's land forces. The Midrasian army officially dates back to 1625 with the nouvelle armée proclamation which created a centralised military under the control of parliament. Previously, the country's army had been based on a system of levies whereby the monarch would call upon local landholders would provide retinues during times of conflict. The newly modernised army created in the Seventeenth Century made use of classical Fiorentine influences, many of which remain in place today such as the naming of divisions as Legions. The force itself has evolved over time however, particularly in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries.

The current army has around 350,000 active duty troops with a reserve of around 120,000. The army is tasked with defending the nation's borders, the Midrasian people and also has an explicit role in 'protecting and advancing the international rule of law' as outlined by the constitution. A number of military academies exist across Midrasia which generally prepare candidates for service in the armed forces. Every potential candidate must have participated in a military academy at some level before being accepted into the force. The Midrasian Army is controlled by Army Board which is a subsection of the Ministry of Defence in Lotrič. The current Chief of the Midrasian General Staff is General Gauthier Pierlot.

The Midrasian Navy, officially the Republican Navy is the naval warfare service branch of the country's armed forces. The navy officially traces its routes back to the reforms of 1492 carried out under the monarchy which saw the establishment of a permanent navy for the Midrasian Kingdom. The policies implemented also saw the creation of the country's merchant marine which were the only ships permitted to dock on the Kingdom's shores. The system itself would go through a number of changes, becoming a considerably potent force following the Midrasian Civil War, allowing the country to gain commanding influence within the Asur and Atlantic Channel. The modern Midrasian navy retains a considerably powerful presence both at home and overseas, with naval bases in Argois, Torino, Quai-de-Roixs, Catania, Talourir, Fortnouveau and St.Louis. Midrasia also maintains a number of naval bases overseas with the Navy having access to Honu Papale naval base in Ajerrin and Point Ouest in Sant Masllorenç.

The Republican Navy currently employs around 90,000 active duty personnel with a around 150 ships in active service. The Navy is managed by the Board of the Admiralty which is a division of the Ministry of Defence. The current Chief of Naval operations is Admiral Jean-Paul Chaufourier.

Nuclear Strike Force

Midrasia's first nuclear test, in Renneque (1947)

The Nuclear Strike Force, or Force de Frappe refers to Midrasia's nuclear weapons program, which operates as a triad of air, sea and land based weaponry. The program, developed in 1947 during the Cold War was intended to be used as a weapon of deterrence to prevent the outbreak of future conflict. Under the Lotric Declaration of 1951, the program's 'zone of protection' covers all 'Democratic Asuran nations', which at the time included Aquidneck, the Arzvan Republic, Carcossica, Chalcia, Cuirpthe, and Newrey. Throughout the Cold War many deployments of the Nuclear Strike Force took place in territories across Asura and other Midrasian allies. Notable sites of deployment included Cuirpthe, Chalcia, West Miersa and the overseas territory of Saint Louis. Today the nuclear strike force remains in place and it is expected that its remit has been extended to include the newly emergent democratic nations of Asura. Additionally, Midrasia is expected to utilise the program for the defence of the member states of the Commonwealth of Democratic Nations, though such an agreement is not codified in any international treaty. Recent estimates suggest that the country's nuclear stockpile may be as high as 2000 warheads.

In recent years, the Midrasian nuclear strike force has looked to move away from land-based nuclear warheads, instead focusing on the utilisation of air and sea-based weaponry, both out of a desire to reduce costs and through technological advancements in nuclear deployment. Furthermore, the strike force has also begun to experiment with other types of non-nuclear high-impact weaponry such as large-yield bombs and kinetic weaponry. Additionally, proposals have also been tabled to disestablish the Nuclear Strike Force in its entirety, devolving matters regarding air and sea-based strikes to both the air force and navy respectively. This plan would also call for the deactivation of the country's land-based weapons systems, which many continue to view as technologically outdated. Furthermore, a number of political parties, such as the Socialist Party have called for complete nuclear disarmament.
