Gapolania debuted in the Euclovision Song Contest 2021 in Lavelle, Gaullica. The Gapolanese entry for the 2021 contest was chosen by through the national selection Festival della Canzone, an annual competition format organized by the national broadcaster Radiotelevisione Gapolania (RTG), consisting of two semi-finals on 21 and 28 February and a grand final on 7 March. The winner was Alina Sefardù with song "Mai" (Never).
Background
Prior to the 2021 contest, Gapolania had streamed the contest since 2013. Invitations for the Asterian members to participate in the contest were issued by the Euclean Broadcasting Union in the mid-2010s and the Gapolanese broadcaster decided to debut during the 2021 edition.
Festival della Canzone, a format to determine a representative of the nation in the contest, is a popular music competition that was first organized in 1982, following the events of the Asterian Spring. It was created as an opportunity for established and new artists to revive the Gapolanese music scene and traditions.
Before Euclovision
Festival della Canzone 2021
Festival della Canzone 2021 was the 40th edition of the annual festival. It traditionally took place in Zeta, however, since 2011, the organization of the festival was moved every year. This year's festival will take place in Curulèbu.
Format
The competition consisted of three shows: two semi-finals on 21 and 28 of February and a final on 7 March 2021. Each semi-final featured ten artists, of whom five advanced to the final show. The qualifiers and the winner were determined by a combination of televote and jury votes. Televote consist of SMS and internet voting, while the jury members will be chosen by the RTG from the national and international established artists, musicians and journalists.
It is not mandatory for an artist to be a Gapolanese citizen - in that case, their song's composer(s) must come from Gapolania instead. Performers are allowed to send in songs in either Vespasian or Chanuche language - usage of other languages is allowed as long as the lyrics in that language comply with Euclovision rules and do not constitute for more than half of the all lyrics. The national broadcaster received 535 submissions by the end of December 2020, shortlisting the candidates to 20 entries, revealed on 2 February 2021. Songs of the first semi-final were revealed on 6 February, while the participating acts of the second semi-final were published on 13 February.
