Realms of the Absolute Royal Federation
The absolute royal federation of Imeriata and her realms is divided into 40 realms and 2 territories. The difference between a realm and a federal territory is that a federal territory is ruled by a representative government in the name of the high king instead of a vassal family or vassal government in the name of the high king.
History
The origin in the federal realms have it's start in the Imerian annexation of Vedian in 1045 when the Stjärnkhrone family started to ruled two of the three major lands and gained control of the majority of the important resources that Scandera had. Their empire was officially split in two large feudal compartments that were both equal. There was the Kingdom of Imeriata that the Stjärnkhrone king ruled as king of instead of high king as he had previously done. Then where there the kingdom of Vedian that encompassed the old Vedian kingdom where the Stjärnkhrone king also held the crown. These two landmasses was then ruled by the same dual monarch in unitiy as the high king of Scandera (later on the absolute royal federation).
This practice continued even as pure feudalism died in the home continent and were replaced with the autocratic monarchy that uses the nobility to fill out important positions in the government.
When after the 200 years war when Suderland and Eteisrannikko was added to the crown so were they also incorporated into the new pan-Scanderan government as "realms" that were ruled in a similar manner as Vedian and Imeriata had been for centuries by that point just as Jarnarna and Karmanjaka was when they joined shortly thereafter and the same fate befell Sydvinland when it was added.
Duties and responsibilities
While terms as "Vassalage" and "fiefdom" is used about federal realms and the smaller parts that makes up a realm so is it important to note that they are not a feudal fiefdom. For instance so is the main part of a feudal relationship lacking between the crown and the vassal in the federation as a realm is legally not allowed to raise and commands their own military forces, instead is this something that the crown funds and is taken care of by the military advisory. Further more so is a federal realm directly subservient to the crown and the crown is well in their right to directly interfere with the politics of a realm and outright replace them with ones more to his liking.
No the modern federal realm's main responsibility is as an administrative entity that collects taxes, write local laws, distributes the realm budget under the watchful eyes of the crown. However there are exceptions to this as some individual realms have their own consitutions limiting the direct influence the high king commands and are de facto or de jure autonomous regions. Al-Jzr Al-Khḑrā being one of the prime examples of this policy even if in later days this have become more questioned due to the crown putting down the slave trade there and demanded that all local noblemen do the same.
