The 2018 legislative election had resulted in the end of the Premiership of Liekele Ykema who had been Premier for 8 years prior to the election. The National Bloc, Humanist Sotirian Union, Progressive Alliance and Green - Alternative Choice all made gains at the expense of the previously governing Liveable Alsland and the opposition Alslandic Section of the Workers' International whilst the Kirenian People's Party kept their 11 seats. In the case of the Progressive Alliance it went from 10 seats prior to the election to 35 and became the largest party of the left in Alsland.

Following the election, President Rita Rebane asked Hepke Veltman from the National Bloc to form a coalition. The following negotiations were the longest in Alslandic history and took 4 months whilst Liekele Ykema remained as acting Premier. The negotiations involved all political parties and an agreement was reached between the National Bloc, Progressive Alliance, Humanist Sotirian Union and Green - Alternative Choice to form a coalition which would have a similar composition to the previous government of Liekele Ykema. Veltman became Premier on 27 December 2018 during a special inauguration ceremony and his government was sworn in later that day. During the negotiations Veltman was accused of tax evasion by multiple news sources, Veltman denied the allegations but was granted immunity from prosecution after being sworn in as Premier.
In 2020, Veltman announced his candidacy for the President of Alsland and Rebane announced her retirement from politics. The move was condemned by his coalition partners who argued he was abandoning a position he had been elected to, as such the Progressive Alliance, HSU and Greens all refused to back another National Bloc Premier and instead demanded Finance Minister Ottila Möller from the Progressive Alliance be sworn in as Premier if Veltman stood down, Veltman ultimately agreed to stand down during the campaign and won the Presidential election narrowly. Möller was sworn in as Premier on 25 April, the same day Veltman resigned as Premier and was sworn in as President by Rebane.
On November 31, the Dellish regionalist Maitiid party announced they would be competing in the legislative election after not running in 2018. The party only fielded candidates in the Dellish Community. The Orange Party was founded on 16 July 2021 as a union of right-wing parties opposed to the government, the Party grew rapidly in support amongst dissatisfied National Bloc voters. On 26 January 2022, an opinion poll showed 58% of Alslanders disapproved of Möller's government which was the highest disapproval rating of her government, days later Möller called a vote of no confidence against her own government by resigning, the government won the vote of confidence and Möller was reappointed Premier. The vote of confidence caused a rift between the National Bloc and the other coalition parties after the Bloc's leader Ermnbryht Vrihte called for an early election and a new interim Premier.

There is no federally recognised voting age and each community sets it's own voting ages for elections, instead it is precedent to let each Community decide on the voting age for elections. In the Swathish Community and Holsaten Community the voting age is 16 whilst in the Dellish Community and Martish Community the voting age is 18. The Dellish Community also has mandatory voting laws however there are no punishments for failing to vote. All Communities have automatic voter registration and all communities use voting machines to cast ballots 7 of the major parties running wish to establish a Federal voting law to standardise Alsland's voting laws. Voters from abroad can request a ballot via mail from their embassy and these ballots must be returned to the embassy or consulate the day prior to the election.

However the laws regarding candidates are the same across the country, to be eligible to stand for the Folkssenaat a person must be at least 18 years old and have Alslandic citizenship. If a candidate has dual citizenship they are allowed to retain it since 2019, prior to this a candidate would have had to renounce their previous citizenship.

According to the constitution of Alsland, legislative elections must either take place on the first Monday of September 4 years after the last legislative election, or be held on the same day as a Presidential election. Days on which federal elections are held are designated as public holidays as of 2020 to encourage voter turnout. As per the 2017 elections law, this will be the last election to have a fixed date which allows for snap elections following 2022.

Liveable Alsland (LA/LE) is the fifth largest party in the Folkssenaat and currently has 24 seats. The party led the government prior to 2018 but it was unable to secure support from it's coalition partners and joined the opposition. The party is led by it's founder and former Premier Liekele Ykema who has not commented on whether he will stand for Premier again. The party has lost support since 2018 after Ykema resigned from national politics to join the Euclean Parliament and run for President of the Euclean Community. In 2021 Ykema survived an attempt to remove him as party leader by populists in the party. As of 2022 it is the only party to not have ruled out a coalition or electoral agreement with the Orange Party. Similarly to the Bloc and Union it runs candidates in the Martish Community with the New Start Party.

The party is subject to a cordon-sanitaire by every other party in the Folkssenaat except for Liveable Alsland. The party is led by Elsert Wassenaar who has been proactive in trying to modernise and moderate the party's damaged perception among voters.

All 201 Senators are members of 18 constituencies which represent each Province of Alsland. Senators are elected using the party-list proportional representation, using the Boeri method.

Date

According to the constitution of Alsland, legislative elections must either take place on the first Monday of September 4 years after the last legislative election, or be held on the same day as a Presidential election. Days on which federal elections are held are designated as public holidays as of 2020 to encourage voter turnout. As per the 2017 elections law, this will be the last election to have a fixed date which allows for snap elections following 2022.

Contesting parties

Parties represented in the Folkssenaat

National Bloc (NB/LS/RB) is the largest party in the Alslandic Folkssenaat with 51 out of 201 available seats and has been in government since 2011. The party is led by Foreign Secretary Ermnbryht Vrihte who succeeded Hepke Veltman in 2018. The Bloc has been the largest party for most of it's history and it has been a member of every government, except 1, since 1929 however recently the party's average share of the vote has been steadily declining from it's peak. Vrithe was originally intended to be selected as Premier following Veltman's resignation however the Progressive Alliance and Liveable Alsland protested the decision and pushed for Ottila Möller instead. It runs candidates in the Martish Community with the Martish Democratic Party who caucus with the Bloc.

Progressive Alliance (PA/PV/PL) is the second largest party in the Folkssenaat with 35 seats. It is currently led by incumbent Premier Ottila Möller. The party in 2018 was able to increase it's number of seats from 10 to 35 which was the best result for the Alliance since it was founded in 2006. It was the first time since 2002 that the second largest party was not the Alslandic Section of the Workers' International. After succeeding Veltman in 2020, Möller became the first female Premier in Alsland. She currently leads a coalition government involving the National Bloc, the Progressive Alliance, the Humanist Sotirian Union and the Greens.

Humanist Sotirian Union (HSU) is the third largest party in the Folkssenaat and has 32 seats. The party is jointly led by author Hilda Schaaf from it's Amendist faction and Suwert Jorritsma from it's Catholic faction. The Union is a member of the incumbent coalition government but throughout the 2018-2022 Folkssenaat term it has threatened to withdraw from the coalition over certain policies such as a planned euthanasia referendum and cannabis legalisation, both of which had been proposed by the National Bloc and Progressive Alliance respectively. The Union is seen as having the most economically leftist policies in the coalition whilst having centre-right social policies. This can also be seen in it's leadership as Suwert Jorritsma was a former ASAY junior cabinet minister before leaving ASAY in 2015 to join the HSU. The party wants to make access to University free for all Alslandic students and implement new measures to tackle carbon dioxide emissions. Similarly to the National Bloc it runs candidates in the Martish Community with the Martish Sotirian Democrats who caucus with the Union.

The Alslandic Section of the Workers' International (ASAY/ASAI/ESVE/TRAS) is the fourth largest party in the Folkssenaat and is the largest opposition party in the Folkssenaat. It won 25 seats at the 2018 election although it merged with the Workers' Party shortly after the election to give it 27 seats. The section's candidate for Premier is Olari Lippmaa. Whilst it had been traditionally the dominant party of the Alslandic left, it suffered electorally after the rise of the Progressive Alliance in 2018. In 2021 the party recovered support after winning re-election in the Swathish Community as well as in the Progressive Alliance's heartland in Yndyk. Lippmaa has called for a left-wing coalition to defeat the National Bloc.

The Orange Party (OP/GP/OK) is the sixth largest party in the Folkssenaat with 11 seats. It was formed during the parliamentary term from members of the defunct National Rally and United Democratic Union. The party is led by Elsert Wassenaar who has been proactive in trying to modernise and moderate the party's damaged perception among voters.

The Kirenian People's Party (KRP) is a Martiland-only party which runs candidates exclusively in that community where it currently leads the government. The party has 11 seats in the Folkssenaat and is led by Ahto Malk who is the Minister-President of Martiland. It currently has 52 seats in the Martish Parliament. It is the largest Martish party within the Martish Parliament as well as the Folkssenaat.
