The university was established as the "Constantine Imperial University of Adtrus" (Vierz: Konstantins Imperatorische Universität zu Adtrüs) by Vierz emperor Frederick I in 1798. The university's namesake draws from Constantine the Great, the first emperor of the Vierz Empire. The word "imperial" was removed from the name in 1991 after the dissolution of the empire.
