A pretender is claimant to a monarchy that has been abolished or is currently occupied by another. A pretender may assert his or her own claim on their own behalf or a claim that is advanced by a group on the pretender's behalf. Entries to the list are limited to claims made on a person's behalf, regardless of whether that individual has actively asserted his or her claim, so long as that person has a legitimate link to the line of succession. Former monarchies listed with support for a restoration include X, Y, and Z.

Ottonia

Until January 1st, 2020, Ottonia was a federation of five constituent monarchies and one constituent republic. On January 1st, 2020, the monarchies were abolished and Ottonia's constituent states all became republics. As such, the former occupants of the thrones of the constituent state monarchies are technically pretenders to their old titles.
