Gabriel II, Prince of Montgisard (Gabriel Johannes Zidore Jacobo; b. 25 December 1990) is the Prince of Montgisard. He previously served as Prince-Regent of Montgisard from March until October 2022.

Gabriel became heir apparent to the Montgisene throne in 2013, following the death of his uncle Robert. He was named Prince-Regent of Montgisard in 2022 following the hospitalization of his grandfather. Upon his succession as Prince, he became involved in a dynastic dispute with his cousin, Virginia I, Duchess of Vescera in what has become known as the Vescera dispute. Gabriel was dismissed from his position as royal advisor shortly after becoming Prince.

Early life and education

Gabriel was born on Christmas Day 1990 at Spitali Universitaria Toussampu, in Ostracine, the first child of James of Montgisard, Count of Maiorca and Celestia Claudia. He has two sisters, Louise, born 1993, and Ines, born in 1997. His father, James, was the second eldest son of the reigning Prince of Montgisard, Joscelin V and his wife Virginia of Tanas. Gabriel was baptized at St John's Basilica, in Sydalon, by Patriarch of All Scipia Christopher II, with water from the Cultivida River. His godparents are Marius Claudius (his mother's brother); Camila of Belfras (Marius' wife); Alice, Queen of Gaemar (his father's sister); and Garlan, King of Gaemar (Alice's husband). He was named Gabriel after his great-great-grandfather Gabriel I, Prince of Montgisard. His full baptismal name is Gabriel Johannes Zidore Jacobo.

At his birth, Gabriel was third in the line of succession to the Montgisene throne, after his uncle, Robert, and father, Charles. He was invested as a Prince of Montgisard from birth, and was heir to his father's Montgisene appanage, Count of Maiorca.

In 2008, Gabriel's father James died when the plane he was piloting crashed, whereupon Gabriel succeeded his father as Count of Maiorca. Gabriel gave the eulogy at his father's funeral.

Education

Gabriel was educated locally in Montgisard by private tutors for his early education. He went on to attend X, later enrolling at Lyceu ta'Aradia, in Ostracine, for prep school. While at Lyceu ta'Aradia, Gabriel was classmates of other prominent Sydalene nobles and royalty, including . He earned his baccalauréat from the Aradia in 2008.

In fall 2008, Gabriel enrolled at Imperial Naval College at Pola, in Latium, for his university education and military officer training. He was enrolled as "Cadet Maiorca". While at Pola, he studied Politics, Philosophy, and Economics and took part in military training exercises. He participated on the school's club polo team throughout his education at Pola. He was an avid attendant of political clubs across political spectrum. In 2011, he took classes as a guest student at XXXX. In 2012, he participated in the Annual Pola–Senturium Trireme Match. He graduated in 2012.

As heir apparent

In 2013, his uncles Garlan and Robert, along with his cousin, died during the Elissa IV bridge bombing, perpetrated by the Alliance for New Judea. This resulted in Gabriel succeeding Robert as heir apparent and Hereditary Prince, due to Montgisene male-only succession laws. As part of his duties as Hereditary Prince, Gabriel began to represent his grandfather Joscelin V at royal court in Ostracine.

Haut Cour appointment

In 2013, Gabriel was appointed to the Haut Court as a Queen's Councillor. In this role, he is reported to advise Queen Melisende III on matters relating to Parliament, domain governance, and general political affairs.

He was later removed from this role in late 2014. However, in 2016, he returned to Ostracine as the court representative of his grandfather and Montgisard. He remained in his role, serving on the Haut Cour for his grandfather until 2022 when he became Prince-Regent of Montgisard.

Prince-Regent

Gabriel was named Prince-Regent of Montgisard after his grandfather was admitted to the hospital following a stroke. Gabriel returned to Montgisard on 14 March 2022, where he was sworn in as prince-regent. He made his first speech to both houses of Montgisene Parliament on 17 March. While his grandfather was released from the hospital a week later on 21 March, Gabriel retained the role of regent as Joscelin remains incapacitated and unable to rule. On 30 May 2022, Gabriel became the first regent to preside over the opening of the Parliament of Vescera.

Prince of Montgisard

Gabriel became Prince of Montgisard on 2 October 2022 following the death of his grandfather. With his succession, the personal union of Montgisard and Vescera ended, and his cousin succeeded their grandfather as Duchess of Vescera. Despite the end of the personal union, Gabriel quickly announced that there would be no change in the administration of Vescera, and that it would remain a territory of Montgisard and ordered oaths of loyalty from lords of Vescera as the overlord. Gabriel did not dispute his cousin's ascension as Duchess.

Virginia disputed the Montgisene administration of Vescera, and the ensuing crisis known as the Vescera crisis ensued.

Personal life

Gabriel is said to be protective of his privacy among court insiders in Ostracine and as a result little is known of his personality aside from a handful of interests. He is a football fan, primarily supporting Destroit AC. He regularly plays polo, and since 2015, he has participated in a charitable polo match sponsored by now Constantine XX Claudius.

Courtships and marriage

In 2014, Gabriel briefly courted Queen Melisende III before her marriage to Michael of Dakmoor.

Eleanor of the Palatinate

In late 2014, following his return from royal court in Ostracine, Gabriel traveled to the Electoral Palatinate, in Garima, to begin his courtship with Eleanor of the Palatinate. The two continued their courtship into 2015, and later became engaged in summer 2015.

Gabriel and Eleanor married in a ceremony presided over by the Bishop of Montgisard, at St. James Basilica. Their first child, Elena, was born in 2016. She was followed by their second child in 2017, Sidore. The couple had two further daughter born in 2020 and 2022 respectively – Luciana and Jordana.
