Solarni Novini (Tengarian: Соларни Новини, Solarian: Solariani Nuntii, lit. "Solarian News"), sometimes simply called the Novini for short, is a Tengarian national daily newspaper, based in Lenovo. Over three centuries old, it is the oldest still printed newspaper in Tengaria. In addition, it has the highest readership and circulation out of any paper in Tengaria, and is considered as the country's leading newspaper.

The Novini is published in the broadsheet format, although it has had an online edition since 2002. It publishes six days a week, barring Sunday, having a combined issue for Saturday and Sunday. It is also notable for being published in Tengaria's native three languages, Tengarian, Armonian Savader and Calian, as well as having an international edition in Gaullican. Up to 1786, the newspaper was published in Solarian. Since 1877, it has been owned and managed by the Petarski family. The Novini would later establish venture into broadcasting on both radio and television, creating the larger company Solarian Media.

It was initally founded by Emperor Ivan IV in 1715 as a print version of the handwritten announcements made to government ministers concerning important political and international developments. At first an irregular publication, it eventually grew to become one of the largest newspapers in the Empire of Tengaria, and was known for its right-wing and monarchist political views. During the Empire and Tengarian Republic, its main competitor and ideological rival was the more liberal and republican Lenovo Novini. It supported the All-Solarian Union, and throughout and following the Tengarian Civil War supported Simeon Kovachev and the Patriotic Union. Due to its alignment with the government, it became the primary newspaper in the country following the supression of most others.

Due to its national prominence and significance, it is considered by some to be Tengaria's newspaper of record, although its reputation is tained by association with the Kovachev regime and the Patritoic Union and right-wing political views. It has been criticised for promoting pro-government propaganda, and is also accused of having extensive media bias, including religious, coverage and gatekeeping bias. The newspaper ranks infavorably with several international watchdog groups.

History

Early Paper

Petarski Reforms

Although radio began to be developed during the early days of the 20th century, it was not until after 1920 that the first radios would make their way to Tengaria. The technology was already being adopted in several other countries, and several minor stations would begin operation during this period. In 1923, Dragomir Petarski opened the first national radio station in Tengaria, called by the same name as the newspaper. Over the next years it would grow in popularity, warranting it to be seperated from the paper.

Great War and Tengarian Republic

During the Great War, it would become heavily associated with the Tengarian resistance and Free Solarian Army during the Great War.

Recent History

Solarian Media

Solarian Media (Tengarian:Соларни Медии or Solarni Medii) is a media conglomerate and the parent company of Solarni Novini, which not only covers print media but also radio and television broadcasting. Its primary subdivision is the print Solarni Novini, but it also includes the radio broadcaster Solarno Radio, established in 1925, and the Solarianska Televiziya, founded in 1962. Together, the company forms an effective monopoly over privately owned mass media in Tengaria, being the largest private broadcaster in each of the three fields. As such, it has recieved criticism for high concentration of media ownership, and the amount of influence which is has over Tengarian citizens.

It has its origins when the owner of the Novini, Dragomir Petarski, decided to open a radio station to take advantage of the new radio technology which was spreading throughout Euclea at the time. Although previous smaller radio stations had been established, the radio station flourished due to the Novini's financial resources at the time, causing it to be the first widespread radio broadcaster in the Empire of Tengaria, and was succesful enough for a larger company to be formed. Following state introduction of television, the Kovachev government granted rights for the company to launch a privately owned news channel in 1962, creating the television division of the company. The company continues to be managed by the Petarski family.

Solarno Radio

Solarno Radio is the radio broadcasting subdivision of Solarian Media, and Tengaria's largest privately owned radio broadcasting company. Next to the state run radio broadcasts, the stations belonging to Solarno Radio acquire the largest share of listeners.

The seven principal country-wide stations operated by Solarno Radio are:

  • SR I Novini (news, current affairs in Tengarian, principal station)
  • SR II Armonia (news, current affairs in Armonian Savader, with regional events)
