Ukyo Samonji CMRT (25 March 1979) is a New Akibander officer serving in the New Akiba Army. A member of Task Force 141, He is the second-in-command under the 8th New Akiba Division and one of the senior commanders in the force. Considered to be one of the best commanders in the field, Samonji excelled in close-quarters, as well as long-range combat. He is currently married to Quenminese-Nihhonese soldier Sumiko Pham and currently has 2 children with her. He is also the only New Akibander to receive a Quenminese award for his actions during the Battle of Hung Yen.
Early Life
Ukyo was born in Hamilton, New Akiba to Daisuke Samonji, A Captain in the Waikato Highlanders and to Haruka Nomura, A Nihhonese immigrant who went to New Akiba to open a tea shop. As a boy, He was the only child and Ukyo loved his parents very much. He and his father would often go target shooting at the backyard of his home. Ukyo received his very first handgun, a Waltzer PP on his 14th Birthday as a present from his father and He wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father. He was enrolled in Major General John Moore Military Academy in Hamilton here he met the love of his life, Nanjou Reika and graduated with a rank of Major. One of his professors was Angus MacDonald, A famous Lucian general.
He and Reika held a very special friendship that blossomed into romance as soon as they graduated.
Military Career
Early Career
In 1998, He saw his first action during The Troubles X924 (1998) on the island of Tanegashima in Nihhon-koku where he was still a young Major at that time. He is also the commander of the 2nd New Akiba Division, A command that he currently holds after he had relinquished the command of the Waikato Highlanders back to his father. His father was proud of him, having attaining a rank higher than his and gaining recognition for his achievements.
Mid-life
During the Second Lucis Civil War, He served alongside his lover and met with Saori Suzushiro, who became his first executive officer and liaison. Samonji fought in Lucis and in Niflheim where he received the second highest award of valor, the Distinguished Service Cross as well as the Crux au Tristain for repulsing a hill held by the Tristainian Guards and taking command of the regiment after its CO was KIA. He also served alongside with Colonel Shizuma Izumi, his best friend from his college days. Samonji and Suzushiro held a very professional relationship until Suzushiro retired to civilian life for a brief moment. The two are currently good friends and look each other as a brother and sister.
In the TRIOC Exercises of 2014, He met Sumiko Pham, who is a female Quenminese-Nihhonese soldier in the Imperial Quenminese Army. She was the first Quenminese that he befriended with. Samonji, a reserved man wasn't keen on making relationships but was generally warm with the people he met. He regards Pham as 'a close friend for a life time'. It was her who also had advised Samonji on the wedding ring for Reika when she was on a trip with him, Reika and Izumi on Bai Bien Ngao. He also attended the 2015 Anniversary to the End of the Third Joyonghean-Quenminese War.
Imperial Crisis
During the Imperial Crisis, He once again served beside his lover and had to postpone the engagement. He was eventually assigned to Task Force 141 as one of its Field Commanders and along with the 8th New Akiba Division, it became a part of the Vanguard force along with the 9th and 7th Zanarkian Divisions and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Rubrum. Samonji received promotion to Colonel after successfully defending Hung Yen against Lorican troops.
However during the Battle of Ruscalov in 2017; His lover, Reika was killed-in-action and Samonji mourned for 3 months, being colder against his own comrades and blaming his best friend, Izumi for the failure since Ruscalov was his master plan. Ever since that event, Samonji has shown little to no emotion at all.
Depression
After his lover's death, Samonji suffered from a near-incurable depression. His fellow officers that included the likes of Richard, Darzana, Klankain, Saori and even Jonathan, William, Bernice and his own liaison officer, Sumiko were concerned about him. Rarely showing up in the briefing room and meetings, Samonji preferred to have every thoughts upon himself to keep others out of the way. He refused to speak to anyone and Kiriya (included in one of those concerned) relieved him of his command and temporarily replaced him with his friend and second-in-command, Thomas Evans.
The only person that was able to break Samonji's shoulder was Sumiko Pham. It was her who helped Samonji move on. Sumiko kept comforting the man and that everything that Reika had done was to save her own friends whom she deeply cared. For 4 months, Ukyo battled depression and anxiety with help from Sumiko. Samonji eventually mended his friendship with his close friend, Shizuma Izumi.
Eventually, Pham and Samonji were working together like how He used to work with Reika. Eventually, He developed feelings for Pham and soon, they started going out. On March 27, 2018; He proposed to Sumiko, which she accepted happily as she herself was already in-love with him. They married on Christmas Day 2018.
Personal Life
Samonji used to be in a relationship with his college sweetheart, Nanjou Reika which blossomed until he planned to propose to her. When she was killed during the Battle of Ruscalov; He mourned for 3 months until Sumiko cured his depression. He soon found himself working with Sumiko and eventually, develops feelings for her. He proposed to her on March 27, 2018 with the wedding ring supposedly for Nanjou but used it for his proposal to Sumiko, who advised the wedding ring for Nanjou. They were married on Christmas Day 2018. He and Sumiko have two children; a girl and a boy, Nanjou Samonji, whom they named in honor of his old lover was born on July 20, 2019 and Hiroshi Samonji, born on December 14, 2020.
Despite his little show of feelings, Samonji is a frontman whenever he does the haka.
