The Great Asterian War, sometimes called the Asterian-Chistovodian War, or the War for the Liberation of the Asterias in Chistovodia, was a major conventional war fought between an anti-socialist coalition of the Asterian Federative Republic, Rizealand and South Vinalia and the socialist countries of Chistovodia and North Vinalia. The war began on April 12th, 1960, with an invasion of North Vinalia by South Vinalia following the refusal of an ultimatum issued by South Vinalia to North Vinalia for North Vinalia to cease the blockade of the [insert highway here]. The [insert highway here] was the sole road between South Vinalia and [insert city here], which had been a South Vinalian enclave within North Vinalia since the end of the Second Vinalian Civil War in 1942. The [insert highway here]'s openness to South Vinalian traffic had been part of a Community of Nations-agreed settlement prior to the departure of CONVMO I in 1955. The South Vinalian invasion led to North Vinalia invoking a defence pact with neighbouring Chistovodia, causing the Asterian Federative Republic and Rizealand, which had issued a joint ultimatum to Chistovodia not to intervene in the conflict, to intervene against Chistovodia.

The war is regarded as among the bloodiest in history, second only to the Great War, with estimates placing between 4 and 6 million military and civilian casualties on both sides of the conflict. It is notable as the first war to see the wide employment of modern military technologies such as jet aircraft, missiles, main battle tanks, nuclear submarines and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.
