The women's system consists of two semi-professional levels and two amateur levels, all organized by the Furbish Ice Hockey Federation.
History
The first ice rink in The Furbish Islands, XXX Arena, was built in 1903, though organized ice hockey games did not begin until the founding of the Furbish Ice Hockey League (later renamed to Furbish Ice Hockey League National) in 1938. The original six teams of the time (XXX, XXX, XXX, XXX, XXX, and XXX) grew into the current 16. The Furbish Ice Hockey Premier League was founded in 1953, and other regional leagues have been founded afterwards.
The Furbish Ice Hockey Women's Premier League was founded in 1984 with six teams (XXX, XXX, XXX, XXX, XXX, and XXX), later expanded to the current ten.
