Historically, the country of Amalfi was divided into a number of provinces. In 1942 this system was reformed, stripping the provinces of any administrative or political function and grouping them into a new subdivision, regions. The provinces, of which there are thirty four, were divided into one hundred and thirty four districts, which are the main subdivision for political and senatorial purposes.
