Jay Abe Gaviria (born February 17th, 1986) is a Zamastanian politician, journalist, and filmmaker, the son of former-Senator Thomas Gaviria and the grandson of former-President of Zamastan Marvin Gaviria. Gaviria served in Congressional Hall as the representative for Zian province's 24th district from 2016 to 2022. He is a member of the Conservative Capitalist Party, continuing the progression of his family's domination of the political movement. On September 28th, 2021, Jay announced his candidacy for the 2022 Zamastan presidential election. Though he saw initial gains in polling, he quickly dropped to a distant fourth place as controversy surrounding personal conduct allegations and past comments plagued coverage of his campaign. Gaviria fell far behind on election day, dropping to fifth place and even losing his congressional seat to Christian Union candidate Brooklyn Wellington.

Early life

Jay Gaviria was born on February 16, 1987, in Tirzah, Zian, as the only child of Senator Thomas Gaviria and Sheila Gaviria. Thomas Gaviria served as the Senator for Zian province's 3rd district from 1970 until 2018, making him one of the longest-serving senators in the country's history. Jay's grandfather was Marvin Gaviria, who was assassinated nearly 15 years before Jay was born.

Political positions

Gaviria has stated that he believes climate change is real, but rejects the scientific consensus on climate change as "too alarmist". Gaviria was one of 22 representatives to sign a letter to Foley Sakzi urging him to withdraw from the 2005 Cadair Agreement. As of 2022, Gaviria lives in a private beachfront community that is building sea walls to combat sea level rise, a known effect of climate change.

Gaviria supports a constitutional balanced budget amendment.

Gaviria opposes expanding access to ZamCare and has voted to repeal it. Gaviria has introduced legislation which would dramatically decrease ZamCare's coverage in favor of private insurance, though he has stated that health insurance should always cover preexisting conditions. Gaviria has sponsored legislation which would have allowed insurers to refuse coverage if they "will not have the capacity to deliver services adequately." Gaviria has also supported longer extensions for short-term health insurance plans, which can exclude coverage for preexisting conditions.

Gaviria co-sponsored the 2019 TELK Act, an immigration reductionist proposal that would cut legal immigration to Zamastan by 50% over 10 years, restrict the family reunification part of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1970, eliminate the diversity visa lottery, and create a points-based immigration system that would favor skilled immigrants.

Gaviria opposes gun control and voted against the 2019 Semi-automatic weapons ban.
