List of Leaders of Luepola

This page lists all the heads of state and their respective heads of government that have helmed Luepola since the end of the Kingdom of Luepola. Conventionally, Luepola's head of state has been the president and the head of government has been the prime minister, but this arrangement was interrupted during the 20th century.

First Luepolan Republic (1818-1905)

The distinction between head of state and head of government was established in the First Luepolan Republic, wherin Luepolans sought to break up the powers traditionally held by the single reigning monarch into two separate figures. The president was thus made the head of state, and the prime minister the head of government. Representatives of the Sliet, including the Prime Minister, were elected to three-year terms. The president, on the other hand, served for a six-year term and was thus elected every other election cycle, starting with the first in 1829. The offices of President and Prime Minister were de facto abolished in 1905, when the Communist Party gained a majority in the Sliet and cancelled the next round of elections.

People's Republic of Luepola (1905-1948)

The democratic republican system that had come to characterize Luepola was eroded under the presidency of Lev Gincburg, who ultimately cancelled elections and transformed Luepola into a single-party state. The head of state thus became synonymous with the Chairman of the Communist Party of Luepola; with the desire to maintain an aura of legitimacy around the new state apparatus, the position of Prime Minister was transformed into the Premier, who nominally wielded power as the head of government. In practice, the Chairman of the Communist Party wielded power over the government to varying degrees, with Anton Marusić ultimately taking full control of the state during the Great War. The position of Chairman of the Communist Party was abolished along with the Communist Party and the People's Republic in 1947, when Saňin Mlakar signed the Treaty of Adtrus.

Reichskommissariat Lüpolen (1948-1951)

Following Luepola's total defeat in the Great War, the country was placed under military occupation and martial law by the Vierz Empire. Two Vierz Reichswehr generals oversaw the occupation of Luepola, and were thus the de facto head of state and government during the three-year period. This interregnum ended with the signing of the Krassfurt Memorandum, which established the end of Vierz martial law and the beginning of a nominally Luepolan government.

State of Luepola (1951-1980)

The consolidation of the heads of state and government in a single office was carried over into the official successor government, the State of Luepola, in the office of President, to facilitate Vierz control over the nation through selecting a single desirable candidate to hold the office. Officially, the President was elected to a five-year term, but in practice the elections were rigged to ensure a sufficiently pro-Vierz candidate remained in power; each transfer of power occurred upon the death or sacking of the preceding president. The State of Luepola was abolished at midnight, 1 January 1980, by Emil Ivanušić, who founded the modern Republic of Luepola in its place.

Second Luepolan Republic (1980-present)

Following the abolition of the State of Luepola, the new Republic of Luepola reworked the structure of the government, bringing it closer to its original form in the first republic. The roles of head of state and government were once more divided between the president and the prime minister. Term lengths were adjusted to 4-year terms for both the president and serving representatives of the Sliet, including the Prime Minister.
