Apelia, officially the Apelian Republic (Apelian: République Apellaise), is a sovereign country in western Patyria. It is bordered by Borland and Vierzland to the northeast, Lairea and Granzery to the east, Lemerum, Tierada, and Camardocia to the south, the Cercian Ocean to the north and west. Apelia consists of 27 provinces and three municipial areas, one of which comprises Belens, the most populous city on the continent. Apelia is the fourth most populous nation in Patyria, after Tierada, Vierzland, and Luepola.
Apelia was one of the major Great Powers of Patyria, and one of the first countries to colonize the Artalias. Apelia was the second Patyrian country after Tierada to overthrow its monarch and adopt a republican form of government, at the start of the Caberran Wars. Apelia was the birthplace of Artaud Flecques, who founded Flecquism, a socialist utopian ideology that would become very influential in Patyria and the rest of the world. Apelia itself became a Flecquist state in 1933, under the leadership of Abel Mallaire and his Apelian Socialist Party. Under Mallaire's leadership, Apelia reformed its prime colony, Bhasar, into a puppet socialist republic, which persists to this day as the foremost socialist power in the world. Apelia fought in the Great War as part of the Socialist Internationale, losing to the Allianz and being occupied by Tierada and Vierzland. Apelia would go on to be a key ally of Tierada and Vonzumier in the Silent War, providing a direct land border against Vierzland to exploit in the case of war.
Apelia leads the Association for the Apelian Language, is a founding member of the Union of Patyrian States and the Leisau Group, and is also a member of the International Assembly. Apelia is classified as a developed nation, and ranks highly in education, quality of life, and health of its citizens.
