With the royal government driven out of Kengkaw, the generals solidified their hold on power in the capital by forming the State Reconstruction, Development and Preservation Council, later known as the "Socialist Republic of Barmia" or "Barmia." In the south, the royal government established its seat in Paungthoung in the Taninthayi Region. For almost a year, the two sides became locked in a stalemate, until the 2-11-18 Nationwide Uprising forced the junta to suppress internal rebellions and strain its military power.
