Chromafey Kuwonko is a small coastal nation neighboring the larger Kuwonko with whom it has a conflicted history with. It is magical and fey-filled and has strong ties to Indefinite Color.
History
The Fall
Chromafey Kuwonko's history started when a broken-off piece of Indefinite Color suddenly manifested and fell from the sky, landing in then Kuwonko. The impact spread disaster and magic throughout the region, completely shattering the previous order of Kuwonko.
The fallen land brought with it the Chromafey. They opportunistically used the chaos to establish themselves in the new land they found themselves in. Through exploitation, magical talents, and feyish deals they quickly gained major influence in Kuwonko, taking on the reigns of control by influencing politics and economics. The fey would turn Kuwonko into a heavily classist system with high inequality of wealth. The Chromafey managed to disproportionally seat themselves into the upper classes. In the end, Kuwonko was controlled by a small number of wealthy Chromafey and Chromafey-aligned Kuwonkese elites.
Kuwonkese Civil War
The nation was centrally controlled from a wealthy capital, while the rest of Kuwonko was underdeveloped an had never managed to properly recover from the disaster of the Fall of the Chromafey isles that shattered the country. The predatory and merciless capitalism and the culture of selfishness the Chromafey had brought had brought poverty and suffering over all but a very small well-off upper class.
Many of the Kuwonkonese had felt their nation suddenly been hijacked. The rage, frustration, and humiliation by the common Kuwonkonese had been building up, and eventually climaxed in a violent rebellion, mainly concentrated in all the poor regions outside the capital. The elites fought and suppressed the rebellion for a while, brutalizing many of the suffering regions even more. The establishment was overwhelmed however, and the civil war wasn't sustainable for them. And so the elite receded back into the capital, and sealed itself off from the rest of the nation, like a fortress.
Outer Kuwonko established its own rulership, and become known as Sultanate Kuwonko, while the capital and its surrounding areas of control would become Chromafey Kuwonko. Chromafey Kuwonko was wealthy, developed, and magical, and had the international support of Indefinite Color and its allies. The Sultanate was a lot larger and with a lot larger a population. It claimed the Chromafey region as its rightful territory, seeing the Chromafey as foregin occupiers. The Chromafey themselves justified themselves just as much a native themselves, as much of the realm was parts of their land when it had originally fallen from the sky. The Sultanate was seen as a nation of hateful savages.
Chromafey-Sultanate Conflict
Many people in the Chromafey, Switterlind or Kowonkese, had been used to their better-off status compared to the rest of the nation. The large size of the Sultunate had them worry about what would happen if it ever managed to bring itself out of its underdeveloped and broken state, given the Sultunate was very clear about its intent of reconquest and hatred of the Chromafey. To keep such thing from happening, Chromafey Kuwonko would be constantly interfering with and sabotaging the Sultanate, causing as much damage as possible in their regular military conflicts to keep the Sultanate eternally broken.
There was paranoia on both sides. The Sultanate was infiltrated with saboteurs and corruption from the Chromafey. It kept constant supply of rumors of conspiracies and secret enemies and poisoned water. The Chromafey actually liked to spread as many stories of conspiracy as possible, especially wrong ones. It would make Sultanate Kuwonko a distrustful and disunified state, where all powerful figures could be accused of being Chromafey puppets (some of which were), and hindered the nation of ever fully working together.
Chromafey Kuwonko itself was full of propaganda. The elite controlled the narrative, and the inequality within its own borders made them fear internal uprising. Frequently was shown the broken Sultunate to contrast with the wealthy Chromafey, to show to the broken state such ideas might lead to. The Chromafey was wealthy and successful after all, and the system kept you better off than in the Sultanate apparently. Rebellious sentiment against the system had to be brutally suppressed.
Chromafey Kuwonko had an interest in keeping the military conflict going, to enable destruction and keep the Sultanate from ever gaining enough room to breathe and recover. It intentionally spurred hatred in the Sultanate by provocation and committing atrocities. This would keep the conflict going and keep the Chromafey Kuwonkonese population behaving out of fear of the violent and hateful Sultanate.
Demography
Chromafey Kuwonko is 14% (700'000) Switterlind and 86% (4'300'000) Native Kuwonkese. The Switterlind are disproportionally represented in the upper class, making up the majority of the highest elite, despite being a minority. Fable is the official language used in the government. It is therefore a necessary language to learn to enter politics. Given it is the native language of the Switterlind, this gives it a feel of exclusivity and association with the elite. Being able to speak Fable is a sign of status. It is also a filter keeping individuals in positions of power that tend to be either Switterlind or wealthy enough to afford a good education.
