Moscow (Russian: Москва; transliteration: Moskva) is the capital city and largest city of the Soviet Union, co-serving as capital of the Russian Federation. With a population of 13.4 million, Moscow and its corresponding oblast are the most densely populated regions in the Soviet Union. The city, which is named after the river of the same name has been the center of Russian culture and government for centuries; it served as the capital of the Russian state continuously from 1547 to 1712 and again from 1918 to the present day. Moscow is the most populated city located entirely within Europe as well as the largest metropolitan area in Europe, with a combined population of 21.2 million in 2019.
First mentioned in 1147, Moscow grew to be the capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1263 and later as the capital of the Russian Tsardom in the late 16th century. It replaced Kyiv as the center of Russian civilization, and its empire from which it grew out of was among the largest in history. Moscow's significance in Russian and later Soviet history is rivaled only by Leningrad, formerly Saint Petersburg, which served as the capital of Russia from 1712 to 1918 with a brief interregnum from 1728 to 1730. Today, Moscow is the economic and administrative capital of the Soviet Union- it serves as the meeting place of the Supreme Soviet and its government agencies as well as the headquarters of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Moscow is home to numerous famous artists and scientists, including the likes of Alexander Sumarokov, Alexander Pushkin, Emanuel Goldberg and numerous Tsars. Major landmarks include Red Square and the Kremlin, Bolshoi Theatre, the Palace of the Soviets and Moscow State University. The current Chairman of the Moscow Soviet is Nazariy Stepanov, serving since 2020.
