Uzbekistan, officially the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, is a Union Republic of the Soviet Union in Central Asia. It borders Kazakhstan to the north, Kirghizia to the north-east, Tajikistan to the south-east and Turkmenia to the south. With a population of 47.6 million, it is the country's 3rd most populous republic. Uzbekistan is home to a significant Russian minority as well as numerous other Turkic minorities, including the Karakalpaks and Tajiks, the former of whom have their own autonomous soviet socialist republic.
