Azerbaijan, officially the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, is a constituent republic of the Soviet Union in Transcaucasia. It shares borders with Russia to the north, Armenia and Turkey to the west, Iran to the south and the Caspian Sea to the east. Its capital and primate city is Baku, other significant cities include Sumgait and Ganja.

The territory of Azerbaijan has been ruled over by various peoples and civilizations. Iranic peoples settled in Azerbaijan from the 7th to 6th centuries BCE. The Iranian Medians and Achaemenids and their successors came to continually dominate and control the region until the 19th century. Islam was introduced to the region with the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century. Turkic peoples began to settle in Azerbaijan with the conquest of Azerbaijan by the Seljuk Empire in 1067. The region gradually became Turkified, but remained under Persian control until the Russian Empire in the late 18th and early 19th centuries conquered the region from Qajar Iran. An Azerbaijani national identity emerged among Azeris in the late 19th century, culminating with the independence of the modern republic in 1918. The toponym 'Azerbaijan' initially exclusively referred to the region below modern day Azerbaijan, in Persia. The name was adopted by the Azerbaijani government. The Azerbaijani Democratic Republic lasted 23 months until the Bolsheviks established the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic in 1920. Azerbaijan unified with the Armenian and Georgian Soviet Socialist Republics to form the Transcaucasian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, which became a founding member of the Soviet Union. Azerbaijan became a republic of the Soviet Union respectively in December 1936, when Transcaucasia was dismantled among its constituent republics.

Azerbaijan is among the most populous and richest of the Soviet republics, particularly in natural resources.
