Kyiv (Ukrainian: Київ; tr. Kyiv, Russian: Киев; tr. Kiyev) is the largest city and capital of Ukraine, and the third largest city in the Soviet Union, with a population of 5.41 million as of the 2019 census. Its nickname, "Mother of Rus' Cities" owes to the fact that it was the center of Rus' culture as the capital of the Kyivan Rus'. After the Mongol invasion wiped the city off of the map, Kyiv was largely superceded by other cities like Moscow and Novgorod. The city was revitalized during the Russian Empire's industrialisation throughout the late 19th and early 20th century. It later became the capital of the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1918 and after 1934 the capital of Ukraine again (Kharkov was the previous capital)
