List of political parties in Great Nortend

Jump to navigation Jump to search

This article lists the political parties of the Great Nortend.

Great Nortend has an effective two-party system comprising of the Drougher Party (Droughs), and the Coalition of the Company of Scodeliers (Scodes) and the Conservative Party. There are only 8 independent Members of Parliament in the Houses of Commons, who are collectively known as 'Plines', a term derived from the adjective 'plain'. The House of Lords operates on a less party-regimented basis; however, most peers identify themselves as either a member of the Droughers or the Coalition.

Despite there being three major political parties, there is often expressed the view that there is very little to differentiate between them, the two original parties, the Droughs and Scodes, having originated in the Olnite Matter of the 18th century.

The most commonly ascribed difference is their respective opinion on the status of the established church, with the Droughsarguing for a more Protestant theology whereas the Scodes support a more Catholic or Orthodox theology. The Conservatives support some reform, but are sympathetic to tradition.

Both parties are considered heavily socially conservative; however the Coalition is sometimes regarded as more so. In terms of œconomics, the Droughers are more œconomically liberal whereas the Coalition is more protectionist.

There are a number of minor parties which do not have any seats in Parliament.
