Uniforms of the Navy Royal (Great Nortend)
The uniforms of the Navy Royal of Great Nortend are worn by seamen and officers in the exercise of their duties. There are five main orders of dress. Whilst full dress is regulated by Dress at Court, other orders of dress are contained in the King's Standing Orders for the Navy.
No. I full dress
For officers, full dress consists of the navy tailcoat. This is double breasted. The cuffs have gold rings denoting rank, except for midshipmen who have white patches on the standing collar. White overalls are worn, or breeches and stockings.
For junior ratings, as well as midshipmen, full dress consists of a navy round jacket, white overalls, white gaiters and ankle boots. The round jacket is similar to a tailcoat, albeit without tails. The collar of the round jacket is a standing collar, and it is buttoned up fully. It is only single breasted. It is worn with the sailor's dress cap. Midshipmen wear a peaked cap, and do not wear gaiters.
No. III full undress
For officers, full undress consists of a more practical form of the full dress tailcoat in the form of a navy tunic with standing collar and a brown belt. It is worn with navy dress trousers. The full dress epaulettes are also replaced with gold shoulder boards. Headdress is the peaked cap.
For junior ratings, full undress consists of a navy double-breasted tunic with a standing collar worn with navy bell-bottomed trousers, a brown belt and the sailor's cap.
No. IV deck undress
For officers, deck undress consists of an open-collared double-breasted grey tunic with pockets. A white shirt with detachable collars is worn underneath with a black silk neck tie. Navy trousers are worn with ankle boots.
For junior ratings, deck dress consists of an adapted traditional sailor's suit. They wear a square-collar white flannel shirt edged in blue denim, a white shirt-frock with collar and neckerchief, a grey tunic with pockets, a brown leather waist belt, navy bell-bottomed trousers, and ankle boots. The headdress is the sailor's cap or sennit hat. In hot weather, No. IVB may be worn with white short trousers and navy stockings, with or without the frock and tunic at the officer commanding's discretion.
Senior ratings wear a uniform similar to that of officers. However, their tunic has only six buttons.
Deck dress is the ordinary dress of officers and seamen day to day.
No. V working dress
Working dress is generally worn as a durable rig when working in heavy duties when deck dress would be impractical. For junior ratings, working dress consists of the square-collar white flannel shirt edged in navy, a grey working coat, black waist belt, navy trousers, black gaiters and ankle boots. The headdress is the sailor's cap or sennit hat.
A pullover may be worn underneath the working coat in cold weather. In hot weather, the coat may be removed and/or short trousers and stockings worn.
