The position of Consul is one of the oldest political office in Latium. From the introduction of the position in the 6th century BC until 1866 AD, two consuls were chosen for each calendar year from among the Senate, sometimes including the king serving. The first consulship in the modern sense was served by Thomas Anicius, 1st Duke of Beroea, who was appointed by Theophylactus I Augustus in 1866 and later oversaw the first nationwide elections. Prior to his election the first political parties began to form. Since the 19th century however, the role of the Consul has grown into a larger role of prominence, resembling a Prime Minister. The earilest recorded consuls were Gaius Vitellius Tricostus and Appius Cloelius Siculus, appointed for the year 593 BC. The Consul serves as the de facto head of government by virtue of being Master of Offices and the head of the civil service. The current Consul is Alexander Pompilius who has served since 11 March 2016.

The position of Consul is one of the oldest political office in Latium. From the introduction of the position in the 6th century BC until 1866 AD, two consuls were chosen for each calendar year from among the Senate, sometimes including the king serving. The first consulship in the modern sense was served by Duke Thomas Anicius, who was appointed by Theophylactus I Augustus in 1866 and later oversaw the first nationwide elections. Prior to his election the first political parties began to form. Since the 19th century however, the role of the Consul has grown into a larger role of prominence, resembling a Prime Minister. The earliest recorded consuls were Gaius Vitellius Tricostus and Appius Cloelius Siculus, appointed for the year 593 BC. The Consul serves as the de facto co-head of government and presiding officer of the Senate. The current Consul is Alexander Pompilius who has served since 11 March 2016.
