Kongelige Air Scovern, stylised as AIRSCOVERN, is the national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Scovern. It is the second-largest airline in Scovern in destinations offered and passengers carried, behind the budget airline Konlunde, but remains its largest by annual revenue. Air Scovern offered direct flights to 81 international destinations and a further 4 domestic destinations. The airline is a founding member of the airline alliance UnitéCéleste.
First founded during the Great War in 1930 as an air cargo company, Air Scovern was transformed into a passenger airline and began operating in 1951. Initially its flights mainly served other cities within the Euclean Community, but began branching out to international destinations in the 1980s. The growth of Konlunde in the 2000s jeopardised many of Air Scovern's routes, and in the late-2000s it came to rebrand itself as a primarily business and luxury airline, emphasising comfort and a high quality of service.
History
Air Scovern's predecessor was Skovernsk Luftfragt, a wartime air cargo company founded to support Allied soldiers on the Northern Euclean Front against Gaullica. The company was rebranded into the commercial Air Scovern in the 1940s, and in 1951 it took its maiden flight from Rimso to Kalstad and became Scovern's flag carrier. International services were added gradually in the 1960s with the increase of commercial aviation, and many of Air Scovern's inaugural domestic destinations were handed to its subsidiary CARN, who continue to run short domestic flights.
Air Scovern was Scovern's most popular airline until the 2000s, when the explosion in budget carriers saw Konlunde overtake it in short-haul flights to Euclea, as well as in its passengers carried. Scovern's government refused to step in to save Air Scovern's market share, and in 2009 many destinations were axed and the airline looked to rebrand itself, pivoting towards the business and luxury travel market. Air Scovern's business class was rated the world's best in 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2022.
Corporate affairs
Operations
Air Scovern is Scovern's largest airline by revenue and international destinations, but was overtaken in the 2010s in passengers flown and destinations offered by the low-cost carrier Konlunde. In 2022, Air Scovern transported 32.9 million passengers. The airline's corporate headquarters are in Korsholm, in Rimso, but maintain additional offices at Biltasgate in Kalstad and Kirkegade in Lagerup. Until 2002 the airline was based at the grounds of Rimso–Fejøbugt International Airport.
Fejøbugt is the airline's main hub, and the primary terminus for most of its international routes. Kalstad–Hamningberg International Airport and Elgebugt International Airport are secondary hubs for Air Scovern, served by most busy international routes and continental routes. Air Scovern owns the largest share of landing slots at all three airports – around 40% at Rimso–Fejøbugt, 55% at Kalstad–Hamningberg and 60% at Elgebugt. Air Scovern is increasingly promoting Rimso as a destination for layovers, due to its convenient location in flights to the Asterias that fly over the North Pole.
Subsidiaries
Through its parent company, Air Scovern Group (ASG), Air Scovern holds a number of full subsidiaries:
- Air Borland and AB Cityhopper – The flag carrier of Borland and its regional subsidiary. Air Borland's predecessor was Borish Airways, which had been running at a loss for a sizable portion of the 1990s. Following a governmental crisis in Borland, the newly-incumbent government refused to bail out the airline without major restructuring and cost-cutting measures, resulting in its acquisition by ASG in 1998 to prevent the airline from declaring bankruptcy. It was rebranded to Air Borland in 1999, and following negotiations between ASG and the Borish government, its regional subsidiary AB Cityhopper was created in 2000 to organise domestic flights. Many of these flights were phased out under government pressure, and now AB Cityhopper provides flights mainly from regional cities in Borland to Newstead–Yesterfeld or Rimso–Fejøbugt.
- AS Cargo – Handles cargo flights on behalf of Air Scovern.
- AS Catering – Responsible for catering on Air Scovern and its subsidiaries' flights.
- AS Teknik – A repair and consultancy firm under the Air Scovern branding.
- CARN – Air Scovern's regional subsidiary. CARN handles domestic flights from small towns in Scovern that are otherwise somewhat inaccessible by train or road, operating funnelling services to Air Scovern's hubs.
Through its parent company, Air Scovern Group (ASG), Air Scovern holds minority stakes in numerous airlines:
- Air Piraea – The flag carrier of Piraea. A 13% stake in the airline was acquired by ASG gradually between 1996 and 2002.
- Gemenwelþsluft – The flag carrier of Azmara. A 25% stake in the airline was acquired in 2006.
- Hennelucht – The flag carrier of Hennehouwe. A 29% stake in the company was acquired between 1987 and 1994.
- Satavian Airlines – The flag carrier of Satavia. A 10% stake in the airline was acquired in 2020.
- TAAM – The flag carrier of Amathia. An 18% stake in the company is currently owned by ASG, with discussions of the acquisition of a further 20% stake as the airline is privatised further.
- Volaretruria – The flag carrier of Etruria. A 32% stake in the company is owned by ASG following two separate acquisitions in 1999 and 2013.
Branding
Air Scovern's logo has typically embraced a minimalist look, consisting of the airline's name in the traditional Scovernois blue with little extras. The first logo after the airline was reorganised as Air Scovern featured the name in block capitals and a serif font, with the flag of Scovern centred underneath. In 1955 the airline switched to a sans serif font, at the recommendation of design consultant J. Birch Cordonnier, and replaced the flag with the airline's newly-adopted slogan, Svæv skyerne ("Soar the skies"). The slogan was ditched in 1963 and the logo changed to a much thicker font. In 1980 the airline first changed to its modern stylised form, AIRSCOVERN, with several iterations before the modern logo was adopted in 2007.
Destinations
Air Scovern offers services to 81 international destinations and 4 domestic destinations. Most international destinations depart from the hub of Rimso–Fejøbugt International Airport.
Alliances
Air Scovern is a founding member of the UnitéCéleste airline alliance, which it has participated in since 2001.
Air Scovern has codeshare agreements with the following airlines:
