Kartvelia (Kartvelian: საქართველო, romanized: Sakartvelo) officially the Kartvelian Soviet Socialist Republic, also previously known as Georgia from 1936 to 1997, is a Union Republic of the Soviet Union in the South Caucasus region. It is bordered by Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south, and Azerbaijan to the east. It shares a 310 kilometre long border with the Black Sea.
