IlIl, also known as Four, is a 2019 Garetolian dramedy film, starring Popo Kalaka and Leka Manasa. It was featured in the 2019 Garetolian Film Festival, where it won the Garetolia Film Festival Award for Best Comedy.
The word "Il'il" is a Garetolian word literally meaning "humor" or "comedy". The name was stylized as IlIl so that it would look like four I's; which is why the film is also known as Four because the title may be interpreted as a Roman Numeral Four.[1] In reality, the numeral is written as "IV", which adds to the comedic effect.
Plot
In the midst of a nationwide antivirus scam, Alo Remasa (Popo Kalaka), who is already in poverty and is still recovering from a divorce, loses KT$653 after ignorantly replying to a spam email by a hacker impersonating his boss and good friend, Kevin Portman (Jeremy Kolton). After realizing his mistake only a few minutes later when Portman sends him a real email saying his account was hacked, Remasa dives into a rage and punches the wall beside him, breaking his index finger. After numerous failed attempts to make a homemade splint, he reluctantly contacts the local hospital who charges him KT$422 for the care. A few days later, a scandal involving Portman and several of his superiors linked to the antivrus scam leads to the dissolution of Remasa's branch leaving him jobless. After Remasa files a claim for unemployment, he learns that Portman was reported dead in a car crash on a road near the Cross-Cona Railway.
Upset to hear about the loss of his longtime friend, Remasa launches into a temporary state of depression and anxiety, during which period his finger heals, however Remasa refuses to take off the splint in fear of his finger unexplicably breaking again. Melela Mololi (Leka Manasa), Remasa's former associate, sympathizes with Remasa and reveals her accidental pregnancy from a friend of hers. Remasa does not believe her, however, and storms off thinking Mololi is only trying to make him feel better about himself. Shortly after the news of Portman, Remasa's claim for unemployment is rejected, stating that he had become unemployed too soon before filing the claim. Along with this, Remasa also learns that Portman and his colleagues created up the scam with the help of an unnamed government official simply known as "P". As his life continues to worsen, Remasa is stunned when he is offered a job from an old friend, Griffin Peters (Isaiah Hama), who works as a tech designer.
After Peters explains the minimal skill required for a beginner and how much Remasa would be paid, Remasa ultimately accepts the job and begins working that following week. In only three short weeks, Remasa is paid KT$1,400, enough to equalize the money lost during the scam and the cost of the hospital bills. After getting his life somewhat back on its feet, Remasa decides to investigate what happened, since no reports point to any action from the government. As his efforts are mostly blocked by redacted reports, he remembers he learnt how to get through to private pages from information told by Peters, and therefore uses his new knowledge to bypass the documents.
