All rates are assigned to a corps each of which specialises in a particular trade or activity. Some corps have branches which further divide the specialisation. Each corps or corps branch has its own colour which is used as a backing on rank insignia. Although each branch has its own hierarchy, whether they are filled depends on the size of the company. Furthermore, each trade rating also has its own trade badge, which is worn above the chevrons of the rank insignia, if any. In the table above, the badges for the Deck branch are shewn.

Branches and their titles are given as follows. Note that the “Coxswain” is the senior rating aboard in the Command Department.

Senior Lieutenants rank with Army Captains. Junior Lieutenants rank as Army Lieutenants. They are senior to Army Ensigns and Cornets, who are equal to Midshipmen.

The Navy Royal is the combined naval and air forces of Great Nortend. It is commonly dated to the arrival of the House of Anthord to Great Nortend, at first consisting of the fleet which brought Edmund V to Galepool. It is a green-water navy tasked with defence as well as international co-operative operations.

Structure

The Navy Royal is de jure commanded by the Lord High Admiral by the King's writ. In practice, command is vested in the Admiral of the Fleets.

The Navy is organised into three fleets or flights : the East Fleet, the West Fleet and the Air Flight, each commanded by Vice Admiral. There is also the Home Fleet, the naval reserves, and the Home Flight, the air reserves. Each fleet or flight is split into flotillas or wings, which are provincial formations commanded by Rear Admirals and based at one of His Majesty's Dockyards of where there are five in total, along with His Majesty's Dock at St. Parth. Flotillas and wings are divided into squadrons commanded by a Commodore or Lieutenant Commander, into which Ships and Swarms are organised.

Ships and wwarms are commanded by a Captain or Frigate-Captain, depending on size, assisted by ranking Lieutenants. The sections of a ship or swarm are commanded by Midshipmen, Pilots or Lieutenants, divided further into messes led by a Leading Seaman or Aircraftmen.

Fleet

Ships

The international and domestic prefix for ships of the Navy Royal is HEMS (His/Her Erbonian Majesty's Ship). Warships are classified as frigates, corvettes, sloops and submarines. The Navy Royal has 45 commissioned vessels, including four submarines, six scheduled for decommissioning in the near future and four sail training ships.

The rate of Able Seaman is automatically given to Seamen with more than three years' experience. An Able Seaman with leadership role is known as a Second Mate.

Corps

Ensigns

Every squadron has two types of ensign, the Naval Ensign and the Squadron Ensign. The Naval Ensign is the Blue War Ensign. The Squadron Ensign is unique to every squadron and usually is a heraldic design. Each ship in a squadron has its own Naval Ensign and Squadron Ensign. The Squadron Ensign bears the ship's battle honours, and the battle honours of preceding ships with the same name.
