The Navy Royal is the combined naval and air force of Great Nortend. It is commonly dated to the arrival of the House of Anthord to Great Nortend, at first consisting of the fleet which brought Edmund V to Galepool. It is considered a green-water navy tasked with defence as well as international co-operative operations.

Structure

The Navy Royal is organised into two fleets : the Sea Fleet and the Air Fleet. Each fleet is split into flotillas, which are regional formations. Sub-formations are squadrons, into which ships and aircraft are organised.

Fleet

Ships

The international and domestic prefix for ships of the Navy Royal is HEMS (His/Her Erbonian Majesty's Ship). Warships are classified as frigates, corvettes, sloops and submarines. The Navy Royal has 45 commissioned vessels, including four submarines, six scheduled for decommissioning in the near future and four sail training ships.

Note that the rank of Lieutenant corresponds to the Army ranks of Lieutenant and Captain. Naval Lieutenants are numbered by seniority aboard ship. Lieutenants of divisions rank with Army Captains. Their subordinates rank as Army Lieutenants. Junior lieutenants hold the rank of Ensign, but are still addressed Lieutenant. They are senior to Army Ensigns and Cornets, who are equal to Midshipmen.

Ensigns

Every squadron has two types of ensign, the Naval Ensign and the Squadron Ensign. The Naval Ensign is the Red Ensign. The Squadron Ensign is unique to every squadron and usually is a heraldic design. Each ship in a squadron has its own Naval Ensign and Squadron Ensign. The Squadron Ensign bears the ship's battle honours, and the battle honours of preceding ships with the same name.
