The absolute royal federation of Imeriata and her realms is a federal autocratic monarchy that carefully maintains a balance between the absolute crown and the various noblehouses, merchant guilds, religious institutions, commoner electorate, and other interest groups, either from the federation as a whole or with more local reach that aids the king in governing the nation through various regal commands, treaties, oaths, and traditions binds the state together. This system takes shape in the federal realms that have their own ruling nobleman that rules on the behalf of the king over a realm with a rather high level of autonomy as the size of the federation would make it impossible for the high king to rule the federation himself.
As a state does the absolute royal federation have a long history that stretches back almost 1500 years when the Imerian kingdom was first created by Emanuel the first after his unification of the Imerian kingdoms. With it's powerbase on the content of Scandera does the absolute royal federation spread out wide and far with colonies around the world that holds a massive population.
Etymology
Imeriata comes from Imeriata proper that derives from "Lafir arf Imer" or "the land of Imer" in eldermål. which over time got shortened to "Imerlafia" which it was written as when it is first mentioned in the holy chronicles. However sometime not long before the unification had the name evolved to "Imeriata" which was what Emanuel the first were crowned high king of.
Geography
Landscape
The geography of the federation varies heavily from realm to realm and encompass large forests, plains, rainforests, deserts, savannahs and large mountains or large fields of farmland. Due to the imperial and spread out nature of the federation are no realm exactly the same as the next however what most people think of when saying "Federal nature" so do they mean the large dark forests with broad rivers that is so typical for northern and central Imeriata even if the southern fields and plains are often not noticed to the constant annoyance of southern Imerians.
Climate
Just as the nature itself so do the climate varies heavily and it can be scorching day in one realm under a hot dessert sun while in the next so can a snowstorm howl in the cold never ending night of the scanderan winter. However in the cold frozen north of Imeriata proper so do the temperatures varies between 15 Celsius in the summer and - 20 in the winter.
Political Geography
The federation is divided into a large amount of federal realms that is ruled by a high nobleman and a federally appointed administration that both rule on the behalf of the king, sometimes with conflicting jurisdiction and interests. Adding to this are there also local religious, and economical interests that often also have codified and legally secured positions of power parallel to the local nobility and the federal bureaucracy. These realms are in turn divided into much smaller fiefs that while mostly ruled by local elites are sometimes represented by other less traditional powerbases.
The absolute royal federation is divided into a lot of these "realms" that is ruled by a local nobleman, either of Scanderan blood or a native, that serves as the high kings Vassal. However the relationship between the High king and the ruler varies greatly from realm to realm as they can rule as a absolute ruler in their own right or more a local figurehead for a local oligarchy or even democratic elements. However what is universal is that these rulers is not in command of the local military forces, tax collections, and inter federal tariffs at the very least as those are powers jealously guarded by the crown.
Krigsmakten
Krigsmakten is the armed forced of the high king and the absolute royal federation composed of men from all realms even if women are not allowed to join outside the nurse corps. As Krigsmakten is well founded so do they maintain a rather massive force of men and 1% of the federal population is wearing the blue uniform.
The royal guard is krigsmakten's infantry, armour, artillery and cavalry that serves as the armed might of the federation on land. Traditionally so have the royal guard always been the strongest force in the federation which is quite noticeable even today as the royal guard is still the largest part of krigsmakten.
The royal and federal navy is the naval assets and the naval infantry parts of krigsmakten. While the Navy have not played much part besides transportation earlier in the history of the federation so have the need for a strong control over the seas been more and more important in later years with the spread of the absolute royal federation to overseas and in recent years have the size of the navy grown and it has even recently been able to compare itself to the royal guard in size and power.
The royal aerocorps is the underdogs of krigsmakten as they are not really considered that important by the rest of the guard but are only used to deny the enemy air superiority and to cover advances by the infantry and navy. They are however often seen as cowards and scoundrels by the rest of krigsmakten.
History
- Main article: History of Imeriata
Pre-human period
The Pre human period is named after the fact that the large Wharen empire had spread out over what today is Imeriata, Vedian, Erathia, Karmanjaka, Jarnarna and Suderland while non-human tribes lived in small tribes under the rule of the Wharen empire. While not much is known about the period from human sources than the holy chronicles and stories so is it known that the Wharen empire were divided into a large number of city states each ruled by a Mage prince that answered to the capital city of Ri-ratis that is said to have laid somewhere around where modern Imerbürg is today. The holy chronicles also mentions how raids were carried out against the human tribes that lived in what today is the northern iceplains and how at least one elven-wharen war was fought but lost by the elves and that non-human tribes were required to hand over members to the Wharen for for blood and for sacrifices to their dark gods. Exactly when the non-human period is supposed to start or end in years is still debated but everyone agrees that it ends in what is called the Vedian migration
Early human period
The early human period is started with what is called the Vedian migration when under command of Vedman the great a large horde of human warriors made the first successful challenge to Warhen rule as they swarmed into the large mountain chain between the human controlled northern iceplains and the Wharen controlled Vedian mountain chain. The war was a long one and with the support of both Dwarven and Troll tribes so were Vedman able to drive the Wharen back and crown himself "the king of the mountains and guard of the human lands" as his people settled in the large and much more fertile lands than their original homelands.
The peace in the mountains was however not a long one as besides the human state so had there also risen various new dwarven, goblin and troll tribes and states that all looked envious at one another and it did not take long time before the previous allies were engaged in fierce warfare that only were broken by alliances to throw back Various Wharen attempts to retake the mountains again.
It took almost four generations of fierce warfare before the Vedian kings finally managed to break the last dwarven king and troll chieftain at the battle of Vidermare which finally truly united the mountain realm with both humans and non-humans obeying under a Vedian king. The unification also meant that a new policy were adopted towards their southern neighbours as they started to hand out bronze armour, ships and bronze weapons to the northern human tribes as well as helped them develop these techniques themselves and allowed them free passage towards the southern Wharen lands that all of a sudden were attacked by howling northerners both from the mountains but also striking hard from the oceans and despite the advanced Wharen magic so were humans proving to be quite talented at making magic nullifying runes.
These attacks accumulated during the Imerian migration when Imer the great lead a massive war host against the Wharen empire under the divine light of the gods according to legend, Legend even says how many of the gods themselves fought with the humans and their allies against the Wharen. Many belives that the cause of the war was a combination of crowding in the north as well as a desire to gain control of the massive southern fertile lands, the holy chronicles also says that the goddess of fate had seen a vision about the Wharen summoning a elderväsen, something that according to the chronicles happened. The war lasted for ten years according to legend as the humans slowly pushed southwards in a eradication war while many non-humans joining the Imerians and at the battle of bladsfalt so where troll chieftains, dwarven kings and a small fairy army present while an elven force were on it's way even it did not managed to arrive in time but where still able to use the chance to sack and burn the Wharen city of Gralir'grath to the ground and killing it's people.
The battle of bladsfalt came to be the determining battle of the war and while it seemed to favour the Wharen at first did a large Imerian fleet of longships manage to sail in behind the Wharen shieldwall on the last day of the battle and break the center of the wall it was charged from two sides. With the wall split in two did the humans send in all their forces which finally after a week of slow battles routed the Wharen force that were quickly hunted down by pursuing Imerians.
with most of it's army crushed so did the Wharen empire fell shortly afterwards and those that could retreated to western and southern Erathia where they at the battle of vastgrans fladen managed to not only halt the Imerian tribal warriors but also managed to kill Imer the great which effectively ended the human campaign. The damage where however already done, The Wharen empire where just a shadow of it's former self and had to endure it's last years under constant attacks from both local tribes of non-humans but also raids from the Imerian kingdoms, the Vedian one and the tribes of the northern iceplains.
Just as it had happened in Vedian so did the peace in Imeriata not last for long, while the countless kingdoms that had popped up were all ruled by humans and non-humans had gotten the roles as vassals with the exception of the few independent kingdoms and tribal lands, This changed at the start of the Non-human wars when a non-human coalition rose up in Imeriata proper and Vedian against the human rulers but in the end so were the human kings able to vanquish their foes and as punishment were the non-humans forced into slavery.
What marks the end of the early human period is the Erathian migration when a third human migration wave, this time the ancestors of the modern Erathians pushed down into the western part of the continent some 50 years after the Imerian migration which not only pushed the Imerians away from western Imeriata and forced the Vedians to give up the western parts of their kingdom but it also finally spelled the doom of the Wharen species that disappeared from written records after that.
Late human period
The late human period starts with Scandera divided into large tribes or kingdoms where decentralised lords ruled over smaller farms and villages of freemen and slaves. War was a given during this time and when people were not busy building up large hosts of warriors to grab more land and extend his influence over free villages or to get other lords to swear allegiance to him so were he leading a warhost to foreign lands to loot and pillage since the strict chronological laws at the time were harsh against murder against civilians.
These laws were however not always respected and especially in Erathian Vedian conflicts were it common to kill or to try to fight eradication war since the hatred between the two people grew. The islands were also colonised and the first attacks against Taranka started to be carried out just as trade and raids as well as attempted colonisation and invasions were carried out against Dimheim even if the later two were never successful.
However what makes the late human period stand out is that it is the only one that has a date and it is said to end in 474 AD or year 0 in the year of our kingdom when Emanuel the first were able to through invasions, raids, political manoeuvring, bribes and marriages finally managed to conquer all of Imeriata proper under one ruler and declared himself high king. The adventures of him and his warriors inspired many legends that are known and loved even to the modern era and he is generally worshipped as a rosetouched by the holy chronicles and the protector of the Imerian race.
Early royal period
The rule of Emanuel the first lasted for 16 years until he died and his son inherited the crown of the kingdom which established the crown as a office that was inherited from father to son. The early royal period were however a bit more stable since the Erathian city states were forced to bound together and inter-state rivalry died down to confront the more and more stabilized kingdoms just as Jarnarna, Karmanjaka and Söderland did in the south and Taranka did in the north.
This meant that larger battles were fought as kings lead massive armies to the field such as the forth Imerian-Vedian wars, the two Imer-Erathian wars, the ten Vedian-Erathian wars, the silver war between Imeriata, Vedian and Erathia and finally the smaller wars that involved Söderland, Karmanjaka and Jarnarna, out of which only Jarnarna managed to get out unscaled as Karmanjaka was isolated by Erathia and Söderland was annexed by Imeriata.
Just as this is the first period in time when it is clear where it starts in Scanderan history so is it also the first to have a clearly documented end, the fifth Imerian-vedian war that started in 811 AD and ended in 861 AD by Vedian being forced into a personal union with Imeriata which effectively made the stjärnkhrone house the main power on the continent.
Late royal period
With Imer-Vedian relations growing stronger and stronger so did the high king look for new ways to expand his influence and fight a unification war. The means to do that made the new untied kingdoms look northwards to the human origins on this continent where still a small human population lived and herded the massive reindeer and mammoth hordes that lived there, both being resources that could be taken advantage of. While the northern barbarians continued to fight against the southern invaders for at least a couple of years even if revolts were punished heavily by punitive expeditions.
The largest change that came was the large Erathian war that lasted for two hundred years and is refereed to as the two hundred war in Scandera even if it was not a continued war and there was decade long cease fires but in the end so were Erathia also forced into the personal union while Jarnarna joined the union voluntarily and Karmanjalka joined a decade later.
With the continent united under firm Stjärnkhrone rule did the royal house turn their eyes outwards and Taranaka was attacked and conquered, Sydvinland and Africa were visited with new longships designed for over sea journeys and even colonised.
The blessed golden age
With colonies blooming and more federal realms being added and federal influence expanding over the world so did in the 19th century what is called "the blessed golden age" start even if this period oversaw the two largest civil wars in federal history, the first being queen Erika's war in the 19th century and the second one was the federal civil war in the early 20th century.
It was also the age when industrialisation came to the federation and large factories made more and more people move into the growing cities and it even saw a rise of federal interest in SCIENCE! as more and more technological wonders were needed to compete with foreign armies and economies and the 20th century even saw federal subjects land on the moon, create satellites in space and create a federal moon base.
Politics
The absolute royal federation is officially an absolute monarchy and according to the law so are the power of the high king unlimited, however despite that so do most federal subjects enjoy lots of rights as a only slightly limited freedom of speech and press (socialism, communism, national socialism and syndicalism is outlawed ideologies since the end of the civil war and trying to spread them is illegal even if you are allowed to confess that you follow either ideology nor are you allowed to actively advocate armed revolts against the crown), the freedom of religion, freedom of private property, right to arms, the right the duels and freedom of assembly are all highly treasured and assured by vows by the high kings rather than outright laws.
The rights of the nobility is also something that is highly treasured by federal noblemen and individual fiefdoms do enjoy large privileges and right to self government as long as those privileges are not misused on the expense of the peasantry and burgess classes.
To keep track of everything so are the royal court also aided by the various advisories (the royal military advisory, the royal foreign relation advisory, the royal legal advisory and the royal internal advisory. The advisory acts like the bureaucracy and their duty is to organise the federation, keep track on the nobles and to ensure that they do their job
Officially do the state term itself as a reactionary mercantile monarchy something that is also rather true since the federation do keep high tariffs and other laws in place to make it hard for foreigners to establish themselves on the federal market while the royal merchant guild privately does their best to drive foreigner inverters out with pitchforks and torches, figuratively speaking and only literary if they can get away with it.
The royal court
To help the high king in ruling his nation so is he advised by the royal court. The court is made up of representatives from all of the advisories, the royal merchant guild, nobility from the federal realms and finally representatives from the larger religions in the absolute royal federation (currently are only the holy chronicles, Christianity, Islam and Judaism holding representatives in the court). The places are either decided by the king on his request but they are otherwise either inherited or assigned to someone by either the advisories or the guild.
When a decision is put before the high king can he either make a decision directly or he chose to listen to a debate, for an hour are the court allowed to debate the issue before the high king can either add another hour to the debate or just make the decision then according to tradition.
Foreign and Trade Relations
- Main article: Foreign Policy of the absolute royal federation
The absolute royal federation do have a very cold and suspicious look on foreigners, while it is happy to accept new federal subjects and expand it's territory through military means so are they at the same time cautious and very picky when it comes to making allies and it tends to be very suspicious of larger alliances even if they have joined alliances as the coalition of ponyist states in protection of the pony species just as it keeps a strong stance against genocide.
Officially so does the federation maintains an aggressive expansionist foreign policy with the goal of the federation covering the entire world and spreading the Imerian high culture to the entire world. The federation does however have a active embassy program and have arranged a smaller enclave in Imerbürg for foreign embassies and have had good and positive relations with quite a few foreign states.
On the economic side so is the federation a mercantile state with tarnifs and laws making it very hard for foreign corporations to establish themselves in the federation but otherwise leaves the market mostly alone with only a few regulations about safety in place to protect the workers but not to bog down the market itself.
While it is very defensive so can the federation be very aggressive at the same time and the royal merchant guild as well as the crown have been known to negotiate and enforce monopoly or special advantages such as large tax cuts in foreign nations to ensure federal economic dominance.
Law Enforcement and Crime
Law investigation is divided between the peace keeper constabulary and the royal guard, both organisations carry out arrests upon the demand of a judge and both patrols the streets in order to keep things orderly and have the legal authority to arrest criminals caught in the act. However so is it the peacekeeper constables that are involved in actual crime investigation.
Each fief have it's own judge (while some of the larger ones have more than one, it is often common that a city has it's own) that is appointed by the nobleman ruling that fief while the royal internal affairs advisory provides with a assistant that keeps records of the trial to make sure that everything is actually legal and properly conducted.
The most common thing to get committed for in court is robbery, theft and horse theft.
Economy
The federation is a large producer of agricultural products and large amounts of farmlands produces rice, grain, wheat, potatoes, turnips, oat and other vegetables and root fruits as well as quite a lot of regular fruits as Scandera grows a lot of cherries and apples. However it also exports a lot of berries as grapes, black berries, blue berries, lingonberries, cranberry, raspberries and wild strawberries. The federation also mines a lot of ore and diamonds that it exports, while it also has a large arms manufacturing industry and the KVG especially is used by a lot of nations in their parade gear as well as the battle rifle of quite a few armies.
Due to the rich history and culture of the federation so is Scandera also a popular tourist attraction where the large buildings and monuments are admired just as they can enjoy, or in some times suffer, the cheep Scanderan commoner markets and food.
Economically so is the federation a mercantile state with laws and tariffs protecting against foreign competition and imports being highly frowned upon socially while export is seen as good and forcing other governments to give federal merchants advantages as tax cuts or even outright monopoly. This mentality have made the federation largely self sufficient even if the realms themselves are not and they have to rely on one another for their luxuries and even daily requirements that they depends on.
However despite the mercantile policies so does the government interfere as little as possible in the economy and then only in the interests of protecting federal subjects life and health. This resulted in that slave trade were not only legal but a common but sadly accepted part of the federation until the federation outlawed the practice in 2012 despite heavy protests after a invasion of the necrontyr empire of the c'tan.
Demographics
Language
While a lot of languages are spoken in the absolute royal federation so is Imerian the official language of the federation and is currently spoken by 45% as a native language and by 85% as either a second or first language. Imerian runes are also very common and often so are signs written in Imerian, the native name with Imerian runes and the native name.
As the federal language so are Imerian taught in schools as well as the language that the lessons are taught in, in royal schools while private ones either teaches in the native language or in Imerian.
Family Structure
Families in the federation tends to be multi-generational with grand parents, parents and children living in one house, when the children comes of age so do the younger ones move out while the oldest son marries and his wife moves in. This means that it is not entirely uncommon to have families of four generations with younger uncles playing with the youngest children in the same household.
Religion
The absolute royal federation has a very paradoxical view of religion, the state is at the same time very secular but also deeply religious at the same time. There are three mayor religions in the federation which are recognised as "the three faiths" that have been granted several rights and privileges compared to the other faiths. These three are the holy chronicles, the Faith of Ishiri, and the Fierce Unconquerable Sun and they are the faiths which most people adhere to and they have all great representation politically and have been allowed to handle some functions of the state by the crown and are legally represented in the royal court. However despite this is theree a certain freedom of religion in the federation even if certain sects and religions remain banned for various reasons.
However to the general populous is religion a very important matter and the crown itself claims that it's right to rule is granted to it by all the gods, not just the ones of the federation and most certainly not just the three big ones. On a personal level though is religion a very fluent affair as none of the big religions claims monopoly on salvation nor that they and they alone are the one true faith. Instead do the three big religions co-operate a lot with one another and with the smaller ones. This have led to a culture that while most people have their own patreon religion is it not uncommon for people to visit shrines and temples dedicated to the other gods to ask for their favour and it is common to include prayers to other gods to be on the safe side.
Infrastructure
Education
Despite the federation often leaving things up to its population to do on their own and preferring a as small government as possible so does the crown offer free education and federal subjects that is a freeman is required by law to attend at least 6 years of education between the age of 6 to 12 where they are educated in history, military education, basic mathematics, Imerian, Imerian history, federal history, realm history and social interaction where they are taught how act in proper civilised society.
However due to the fact that this is only for freemen so are slaves often notoriously under educated and not able to read or write which means that the literacy is at 66% in the federation.
Transportation
Just as with the schools so are the large road network also owned by the crown even if there just as with the schools are private roads and railways maintained by various corporations while the sea travel is almost entirely privatized.
Healthcare
Healthcare on the other hand is entirely privatized with the larger more expensive hospitals offering the best for the rich than can afford them while the commoners on the other hand have to rely on free clinics owned by noblemen or the churches to provide for their subjects/faithful and such clinics are common in most of the major cities and the richer fiefs even if they are notoriously slow. More than that so are there also doctors and old healers that provides with traditional medicine which in most cases are trusted more than the new machines by the technophobic and superstitious commoners.
Imerian high culture
There are countless of cultures in the federation but there is one praised as the highest of them all, the destiny of all the world and the only true light of civilisation; the Imerian high culture. While not mandatory so are the Imerian culture preferred and the most influential. Its language is spoken almost universally over the federation and Imerian mannerism and way of thinking are either slowly creeping into other societies through the school system or have already effectively replaced the local culture as in Sydvinland and Imerian Africa.
The basis for Imerian society is knowing your duties towards your superiors and inferiors, as a superior nobleman are you honour bound to care for and protect your subjects as well as ensuring their freedom. On the other hand so are commoners expected to respect and honour their social superiors. People that does not follow this is seen as lazy, cruel or just with no respect for the rest of society and the way things are supposed to be, of course there are a lot of arrogance and noblemen are not entirely unknown to skip their duties and tend to be quite arrogant as a result just as there are lots of commoners that hates the ruling nobility.
Music
Imerian music is as everything else very traditional and folk songs that have been sung for centuries are still very popular just as new orchestras and military bands are quite common amongst the nobility. The more traditional Scanderan music is often romantic in nature and either about great heroes of old and their honoured lives or about love and loss.
The common musics or "Alvalks musik" as it is known as in Imerian is divided into two large subgroups, "ballader" and "kulning". The second have it's origins in the calling cries used by peasants to call for cows and communicate with one another over large distances just as it was widely used by sailors to communicate with harbours and each others without sailing away from their route just as it is often used in rituals by followers of the holy chronicles. In songs so are it often sung in high pitched tones by women and have a characteristic haunting and sad tone to it and songs sung like this often have sad lyrics and tends to tell tales of loss.
The other gene of traditional music is called "ballader" or ballads that tends to be happier and faster than kulningar, these songs are often about glorious heroes of old, nature spirits, historical battles or just plain jokes made as a parody or an insult to the person that they are about.
The traditional instruments used for either style are the traditional pipe, the fiddle, Hurdy-Gurdy, Keyharp, Bagpipes, harps, drums, mouth harps, Birch trumpets and cowhorns.
Art and architecture
Imerian art is often classified as romantic one which is in contrast with the Gothic and imposing architecture that is highly treasured. As a result so are paintings often concentrated on nature, people or battlefields in a romantic tone. The colours are often bright and harminous and often depicts fog, twilight or moonlight or tends to depict great romantic versions of battles of old or pictures out of the holy chronicles where heroes stands tall with swords in their hands even if blood or wounds tends to be absent.
Architecture do however tend to take another tone as the Imerian gothic style values large rooms large doors and windows that makes people feel small and as if they were shrunken or in a scale a couple of sizes too small. Sandstone is a very trestured building material and stained windows are generally seen as a great addition to walls allready decorated with statues and gargouyles on the outside. Roofs tends to be high with very steep angles and towers and outer walls inspired by castles of old are also highly treasured parts of any house.
Of course both styles are not completely seperate and buildings tends to look dark and foreboding in paintings which cuts a sharp contrast between them and the inviting and friendly nature around them while statues are also often made in a romantic way while gardens are also often used besides the large gothic buildings and are often designed to be just inviting and romantic.
Literature
Just as in art so are Imerian literature often rather romantic and tends to focus on old knights or knight like characters or modern cavalrymen and officers in modern settings facing hordes of evil beings or just fooled natives that have been tricked by some evil force but still acting civil and honourable and often have either redemption for the villain or them confessing to the hero that he was the better man and that they admired him for it or that the enemy king admits his fault and surrenders to the hero.
It often tends to play up nature and people as inherently good with a strong positive spirit about most things just as it praises the innocent, heroic, gentlemanly behaviour, kindness and nature.
Cuisine
Imerian food tends to be rather bland as with the exception of "eldgras", or "fire weed" that is mainly used for meat, so are Scandera rather lacking in native herbs and spices and instead so are cream, butter and salt used to give the food it's taste. The food itself is often made out of turnips, onions, potatoes and other vegetables with meat from raindeers, cows and pigs on the side.
