The Commonwealth Crisis (5 October 2017 - 19 August 2019) was a series of skirmishes, battles, and political crisis that emerged in the Lucis Isles during the tenure of Ardyn Izunea as Prime Minister. It originated with the installment of Izunea as Prime Minister following the 2017 Great Lucis general election in 5 September 2017. Izunea pushed for a Republican Lucis and abolishing the monarchy. The 2017 Lucis Republican Referendum took place on 25 September 2017 with more than 70% of the voters voting to retain the monarchy on the official count. In 1 October, incidents of kidnappings took place throughout Lucis and various Lucian Special Forces were recalled to handle the situation. Four days later, the Cornwall Midnight Incident took place with a patrol from Task Force 141 scouting Cornwall and finding out that the city was to be the origin of a Republican insurrection. The nearby Task Force 141 garrison on Fort George reacted immediately and evacuated north to prevent the Republicans from overwhelming the small but specialized force.

Minor skirmishes in Birmingham, Insomnia, and Manchester took place. In Niflheim, the uprising took place south. In the Commonwealth realms of Tenebrae and Altissia, the uprising spread throughout the country but it did not gain any major support from the local populace. Following this, Izunea proclaimed the United Empire of Lucis and South Niflheim, which the allies designated as a rogue state. Former Prime Minister Cor Leonis was proclaimed as the acting Prime Minister of the United Kingdom until 5 September 2018, when the previous Prime Minister before Izunea, Ignis Stupeo Scientia was voted again as part of the Restoration Parliament.

The Crisis lasted until 19 August 2019, when Izunea and all implicated Republican ministers were captured.
