Moldavia, officially the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (abbreviated as "MDSSR" or "Moldavian SSR") is a republic of the Soviet Union. Its territory, sandwiched entirely between Ukraine and Romania, is the second smallest in the Soviet Union with an area of 33.85 thousand square kilometres. Originally the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Moldavia's territory was established after the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina. On August 2nd, 1940, Moldavia was elevated from an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic to a full "independent" republic of the Soviet Union. Its territory was reoccupied by Romania from 1941 to 1944. After World War II Soviet sovereignty was restored and subsequently Moldavia has continued to be one of the 15 Union republics.
