Template:Region icon Kylaris The cradles of civilization are the locations where civilization - typified by the development of urbanization, centralization, and specialization of labor, and usually also by dependence upon sedentary intensive agriculture, social stratification, the emergence of symbolic, domestication of plant and animal species, public works & monumental architecture, and systems of communication such as writing - is considered to have independently emerged from simpler forms of social organization - such as hunting-gathering and nomadic pastoralism - in Kylaris.
There are generally considered to be seven "true" cradles of civilization in Kylaris. Five of these - ancient Irvadistan, !ancient egypt, ancient Satria, ancient Shangea, and ancient Dezevau - are "Old World" cradles, all located in the continent of Coius; the two "New World" cradles, ancient Aucuria and !mesoamerica, are located in Asteria Inferior and Asteria Superior respectively. In each of these locations, civilization emerged gradually and independently from the emergence of agricultural surplus, which allowed for the emergence of labor specialization, social hierarchy, and centralization of power.
In addition to these cradles, the term "cradle of civilization" is also sometimes used informally or vernacularly to refer to locations where civilization did not truly emerge independently, but where a particular "civilizational tradition" - such as Euclean civilization or Bahian civilization - is considered to have emerged or crystallized.
Development of the concept
During the 19th century, most Euclean scholars believed that civilization began in ancient Irvadistan, which was regarded as a singular "cradle of civilization" whose influence subsequently radiated across Coius and Euclea. [later scholarship revealed that this was stupid; turns out the other cradles were older than white people thought, and also if irvadistan was the only one how do you explain the asterians?]
Contemporary scholarship recognizes seven areas where "pristine" civilizations emerged:
- the whichever river(s) valley of Irvadistan, located in modern-day Zorasan
- the !nile river valley, located in modern-day Nise and Sohar
- the Bashurat river valley of Satria, located in modern-day Ajahadya and Patasura
- the !tbd river valley of Shangea
- the this is up to allen of Dezevau
- the valleys and highlands of the Vaskaranas Mountains, located in modern-day Aucuria
- the !mesoamerican Arucian Coast, located in modern-day Ardesia and Vinalia
[the order in which these were recognized by scholarship]
[speculation as to why these locations were where things emerged, and as to why some saw civilization emerge earlier than others]
Emergence of civilization
[explain the process of nomadism -> sedentarism -> civilization]
"True" cradles
Ancient Irvadistan
[!sumer/!uruk and !akkad in irvadistan]
[(CLOSING PARAGRAPH ON THE END OF THE CRADLE PERIOD) later !assyria and !babylon and whatnot, cultural influence of !mesopotamia radiating into modern-day tsabara and pardaran]
!egypt
[!ancient egypt]
[(CLOSING PARAGRAPH ON THE END OF THE CRADLE PERIOD) idk this is up to nise and sohar; might just be solaria, maybe????]
Ancient Satria
[!indus river valley civilization, !harappa and !mohenjo-daro]
[(CLOSING PARAGRAPH ON THE END OF THE CRADLE PERIOD) collapse of the !IRVC, presumably followed by the arrival of proto-eucleo-satrians]
Ancient Shangea
[!yellow river civilization, then the various other archaeological cultures and mythological dynasties preceding the xiang]
[(CLOSING PARAGRAPH ON THE END OF THE CRADLE PERIOD) the xiang dynasty and the transition from prehistory to history]
Ancient Dezevau
[this is entirely up to allen]
Ancient Aucuria
[the pativilkas civilization, which is !caral-supe/norte chico]
[(CLOSING PARAGRAPH ON THE END OF THE CRADLE PERIOD) the pativilkas collapse and are replaced by the kiljakoljas, the !chavin]
!mesoamerica
[the !olmecs]
[(CLOSING PARAGRAPH ON THE END OF THE CRADLE PERIOD) as the olmecs fade, they are replaced by the !maya in vinalia and !teotihuacan in ardesia]
Other cradles
Euclean civilization
[obligatory white people going "muh greece and rome", because of course; not an independent cradle due to !egyptian and !mesopotamian influence but that's not going to stop the crackers]
Bahian civilization
[i think it would be cool if the bahians dubbed part of bahia to be the cradle of bahian civilization, even though said cradle wouldn't be a true cradle due to influence from !egypt and !dezevau, on the grounds that said location was an early center of bahian society and the place that crops like yams and sorghum were domesticated, etc. - the bahia page suggests yemet?]
Pseudohistorical uses
[any whackjobs misapplying the term "cradle of civilization" to random things or made-up concepts as a form of nationalistic or cultic pseudoscience nonsense - nero's talk abt zorasan trying to minimize irvadistan while exaggerating pardaran's antiquity could go here, as could that senro-ansene thing i mentioned to ine, and any number of euclean "ackhually the weranics/marolevs had their own cradle" type things]
