The cradles of civilization are the locations where civilization - typified by the development of urbanization, centralization, and specialization of labor, and usually also by dependence upon sedentary intensive agriculture, social stratification, domestication of plant and animal species, public works & monumental architecture, and the emergence of symbolic systems of communication such as writing - is considered to have independently emerged from simpler forms of social organization - such as hunting-gathering and nomadic pastoralism - in Kylaris.
There are generally considered to be seven "true" cradles of civilization in Kylaris. Five of these - ancient Irvadistan, !ancient egypt, ancient Satria, ancient Shangea, and ancient Dezevau - are "Old World" cradles, all located in the continent of Coius; the two "New World" cradles, ancient Aucuria and Tonatihcan, are located in Asteria Inferior and Asteria Superior respectively. In each of these locations, civilization emerged gradually and independently from the emergence of agricultural surplus, which allowed for the emergence of labor specialization, social hierarchy, and centralization of power.
In addition to these cradles, the term "cradle of civilization" is also sometimes used informally or vernacularly to refer to locations where civilization did not truly emerge independently, but where a particular "civilizational tradition" - such as Euclean civilization or Bahian civilization - is considered to have emerged or crystallized.
Development of the concept
During the 19th century, most Euclean scholars believed that civilization began in ancient Irvadistan, which was regarded as a singular "cradle of civilization" whose influence subsequently radiated across Coius and Euclea. [later scholarship revealed that this was stupid; turns out the other cradles were older than white people thought, and also if irvadistan was the only one how do you explain the asterians?]
Contemporary scholarship recognizes seven areas where "pristine" civilizations emerged:
- the whichever river(s) valley of Irvadistan, located in modern-day Zorasan
- the !nile river valley, located in modern-day Nise and Sohar
- the Bashurat river valley of Satria, located in modern-day Ajahadya and Patasura
- the Hongcha Basin of Shangea
- the Buiganhingi-Bugunho basins of Dezevau
- the valleys of the Vaskaranas Mountains, located in modern-day Aucuria
- the Tonatihcan region, located in modern-day Ardesia and Vinalia

Ancient Dezevau
Agriculture is believed to have been independently originated in the Bigiamhe Swamp around eight millennia before present, based on bananas and yams. Pottery was developed around five millennia before present and ironworking shortly thereafter. The Dhebinejo culture is dated from about that time to about 1000 BCE; it spread across the Buiganhingi River and Bugunho Lake basins, with little archaeological evidence of writing but living in compact villages and developing momhe jiubou (a fertile char-infused anthrosol) to support intensive agriculture. Sugarcane was also cultivated. The Buazajini cluster of archaeological sites in Vadidodhe are perhaps the most important attestation for the Dhebinejo culture.
Around 1000 BCE, cities began to emerge, possibly catalysed by immigration and assimilation from elsewhere (the Zibaic migration-catalysis hypothesis). This begins the early Dezevauni city-state period, in which Badi, Old Ziba and its script and other significant developments soon occurred. Subsequent periodisation is difficult, but it is agreed that the transition from prehistory to ancient history was prior to the turn of the Common Era in Dezevau.

Pseudohistorical uses
