The General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union[a] is the leader of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), the sole-ruling party of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
The general secretary heads and directs the activities of the communist party, which is given an absolute monopoly on all political power. The general secretary is thus considered the de-facto supreme leader of the Soviet Union.
