.su is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Soviet Union. It was established on 19 September, 1990. Registrations are restricted exclusively to Soviet citizens and organizations. Management of the domain (and internet traffic as a whole) is handled by VNIIPAS, a government organization.

Second-level domains

.su has numerous second-level domains for different general purposes, such as .ac.su for academia.

General second-level domains

  • .ac.su — scientific institutes and higher education
  • edu.su — education
  • gov.su — used as a domain name for all government organizations, including the administrations of oblasts and cities.
  • mil.su — Soviet military organizations
  • .net.su — organizations related to the internet (e.g. networking)

Second-level domains for the Union Republics

The Republics of the Soviet Union do not have their own top-level domains, instead, they have second-level domains.
